Help! I hosed my Startup-Sequence!
« on: December 06, 2003, 06:55:29 PM »
The machine is a 1200 with a 1230/50 accelerator, 64 meg of fastram, and a internal flicker fixer. I'm running OS 3.9.  I erased a line from S:Startup sequence and now when the machine boots, it says "please insert volume ENV in any drive".

If I hit cancel several times, eventually it looks like 3.1, and when I start programs the ENV message appears until i hit cancel a lot.

Does anyone know how to add the line?
If you guys need to see the entire startup, let me know and i'll type it in here. The way the drive is partitioned is pretty standard(workbench is dh0:,etc.)

I appreciate anyones help in advance, i'm not the Amiga master, i bought it at Vesalia(the nicest people ever) when I was in the Army.  My friend had a 2000 back in the day, but we only played games. I'm trying to train up for OS 4.0 :-D

start from the emergency-disk
(don't forget to also insert the 3.9 CD-ROM)

or just start without startup-sequence...
(Hold both mouse Buttons when  you turn on the miggy)
until the early startup-menu appears

at the command prompt start your text editor..
and open startup-sequence

Sounds like you deleted

Assign >NIL: ENV: RAM:ENV

which should immediately follow

C:MakeDir RAM:T RAM:Clipboards RAM:ENV RAM:ENV/Sys
C:Copy >NIL: ENVARC: RAM:ENV ALL NOREQ
I sold my Amiga for a small fortune, but a part of my soul went with it.

Probraly this is missing:

makedir ram:env
assign env: ram:env
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Simple, just copy startup-sequence from your os3.9 cd over your sys:s/startup-sequence.

This should help.. :-D
The Power RangerZ uses Amiga, and You??

Since you've already gotten your help, let me just say this:

BACKUP! :)

It's wise to backup your sys:s (startup) drawer, as well as sys:prefs/env-archive (config) and probably others too. They're usually small in size, but rather important.

Also back up your rdb to ensure you can restore your partitions if they get screwed. There's several tools on aminet for this, usually named something including 'rdb' :)

Sincerely,

-Kenneth Straarup.
