There is another way around this problem. I use a logitech G5 gaming mouse that the speed can be changed on the fly - there's a switch on top of the mouse (directly behind the wheel) that allows this. Damn handy feature.
The downside is that this thing is expensive. But it's a tank - great laser mouse! USB, of course.
