Morphos / OSX dual boot - Too many problems - Help?
« on: October 21, 2010, 10:43:31 PM »
Ok, I have a Power Mac G4 which runs Morphos fine.

I installed OS X and created a 2.something Gb partition + a 60Mb Partition. Of course there is also the OS X partition.

I booted MorphOS cd and it booted up fine.

Further than that too many problems. I found a PDF guide but still had problems.

Is there some easy way?

I want to have the Mac as a dual boot OS X and MorphOS machine.

It currently has OS X 10.4.11 (Tiger). So no boot camp. And it cannot run Leopard because its 466Mhz.

I think you're referring to http://dreamolers.binaryriot.org/dualboot.pdf as the pdf that tolds how to set up a dual boot system.
I think there is only one alternative to that approach: Get a firewire external hdd and install OS X on the firewire disk and MorphOS on teh internal disk. If you plug in the fw cable before powering on/reset OS X boots, if you unplug the cable MorphOS boots. Very clean separation, very easy, very handy, no delaying boot menu, but at the cost of an external drive. I use that solution and like it (but I very rarely boot up into OS X anymore, I think last time was somewhen in July or August)

Zylesea's solution is about the best way to do this. Personally, I've given up OSX and dual boot MorphOS and Ubuntu. That's a much easier dual boot system and it allows me to use the hard disk space above 128GB.

I have followed the same guide that you mentioned and it does work perfectly but you have to follow the instructions perfectly.  It took me a couple of tries to finally get it right but it isn't to bad.  I default boot to MorphOS and can boot into OSX by pressing the 'option' key on boot.

I just used 2 separate hard drives in my G4. Can't get much easier than that.

So from what i am reading here, 2 hard drives is the best option.

Instread of an external... can i just add another internal hard drive ?

Have one hard drive with OS X and the other with Morphos ?

To choose my boot hard drive i would just have to hold down "C" like when i want to boot of CD ?

Can the second HD be the one with MorphOS ? as OS X is already installed on the factory (first) hard drive and i dont feel like installing it again.

No, the "C" key is for CD boot only. To Get the Boot selector screen, you need to press the option key (if you have an Apple keyboard) or the ALT key (if you have a PC keyboard)

Is the drive correctly jumpered (master / slave)?

I think i had a faulty ram chip as even OSX was crashing when i would go on youtube although it was marking 768MB ram like its supposed to. Gonna try again.

EDIT: Nope... OSX is now fine but Morphos is still crashing when trying to install :(

The computer just freezes... No error messages .. Nothing

Cable select is often a bad choice in my experience. Try to jumper it as master or slave correctly.

You may find it easiest to:

1 - Remove your OSX hard drive;
2 - Install your 'new' hard drive (for MorphOS) - ensure to set it as 'master';
3 - Install MorphOS from the CD (use automatic partitioning to avoid problems) and then remove the CD from the drive;
4 - Reboot into MorphOS (to check it is working);
5 - Re-install your OSX hard-drive (either as 'Master' on a different PATA bus, or as 'Slave' on the same PATA bus;

Your Powermac should now boot to MorphOS by default, and you should now be able to choose to boot into OSX by holding 'Alt' during startup.

One thing to note is that automatic partitioning gives you a system drive which is only 511MB. You can always install your 3rd party applications to the 'Work' drive, or alternatively you can re-partition the drive AFTER INSTALLATION to suit your needs and copy your system files over to the new partition manually.

Hope that is helpful,

Rich

PS - If there are other faults causing crashes (as per your latest post) then all bets are off. I'd recommend that you figure out what the problem is under OSX (memtest or equivalent, try removing PCI expansion cards, try changing hard-drives, re-seating CPU module, cleaning away 5+ years-worth of dust, etc).

PPS - Good luck getting it sorted out, it really is worth it in the end. MorphOS is coming on leaps and bounds, and is my primary OS these days (I only keep Windows for my laptop).

Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

I have tried the option of SLAVE rather than cable select. I have not tried Rich's option of switching hard drives yet. Will try that later.

Now its worse. When booting the MorphOS cd i get the MorphOS logo as normal and when it comes to that window where you select the language, keytype etc it looks terrible like the window is black and cant see the words or buttons.
