Amiga os 3.9 XL ?
« on: October 17, 2010, 08:06:54 AM »
Hi i was wondering if anyone has ever used the Amiga os 3.9 XL,

Only i bought the os 3.9 and it was very good but it did throw up a few problems ,which i put down to my 1200 Amiga maybe being a little short on proccesing power ,so i came across the Amiga os 3.9 XL version which was a download and i thought was a xtra light version of what i had already paid for ,so i downloaded it.
Now i still not sure what ive got but my question is,why is the downloaded amiga os 3.9 XL so good compared to the Amiga os 3.9 i bought ,infact its quicker,it hasnt crashed yet ,and it will play Beatle mp3s non stop ,unlike the the os 3.9 bought version ,which if i load more than 10 songs at a time in to the amp crashes .anyway musnt grumble best wishes Brian:):):):):):):):)

It's definitely not legal. It was already debatable when it was sold and it is definitely illegal if you download it now.

AmigaOSXL a.k.a. Amithlon is a package of two emulators meant to be run on a PC. Amithlon runs natively (using a Linux kernel), OSXL runs on top of QNX (included). It includes an adapted version of OS 3.9 which contains several files only usable on the emulators.

You probably only downloaded the OS 3.9 archive, otherwise (as a CD ISO image) it would be obvious that it's not meant to be run on a real Amiga.

Amiga OS XL is a package that contains 2 emulators, AmigaXL, which runs on top of QNX 6.x and sort of merges the 2 oses to a degree, and amithlon, which sits ontop of a linux based kernel, but gives the user Amiga OS only, but with direct hardware access to the system its running on and a few other advantages. Both have an updated os3.9 with boing bag1 installed, but apart from speed there's no real difference in terms of the OS compared to the "normal" os3.9 version (a user can install boing bag1 on normal os3.9 as well if they chose and so on). Amiga OSXL though now is no longer sold due to legal reasons, so as suggested if youve obtained it, its an illegal download.

Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

Slightly off topic, but I was (and still am) a big fan of Amithlon. Some of my favorites amiga years were spent using it, and its only really semi recently that Ive started using AROS as my x86 "amiga" rather than amithlon. Having said that though I do still play around with amithlon sometimes, as they (amithlon/os3.9 and AROS) have a little bit of a different amiga flavor (much in the way Id use os4.x and mos sometimes if I had the hardware they run on). I remember the 1st time I played good quality dvd rips on an amiga syste, through froggerng on amithlon/os3.9,... big moment for me :) Same with playing streetfighter2/mortal kombat 3 and so on full speed with sound with amiga mame, and a few other things that can only happen with raw speed. I'd seen it all on pc, etc before, but using all that sort of software on amiga os for the 1st time was a lot of fun :)
Good times  :)

Oh yeah, and just wondering, is it AmigaXL (the one that needs QNX), or amithlon (live booting one) that you've used ? Both are good, but if your hardware is supported I still believe amithlon is the best way to experience Amiga OS3.9 on an x86 machine (unless you mostly want to play old games and/or scene demos).

Hi ,and yes it is the Amiga XL , I downloaded it on to a disc and installed  it on my hardrive thinking it was a light weight version of what i already bought ,and if there is a legal way of buying a copy of the Amiga XL you can have my money now and it would be money well spent ,it really is quicker and better than the normal os 3.9 ,any ways i will use it for a bit,and then back to the normal os 3.9 which i do like ,thanks for your input it was most interesting very best wishes Brian
