So, I've read that the torque with wich you mount an HD on each corner can have catastrophic consequences if very uneven, or something....

Being mounting a travelstar in my A1200 at this very moment I decided to stop and ask, because I was gonna use only two screws (the A1200 HD mouting surface doesn't have the right spacing).
Any suggestious beside the obvious one of making two more mounting holes? Some adapter?

If you're using the A1200 mounting cradle then I assume you're installing a 2.5" drive. If that's the case, these things are designed for laptop use and so are more resistant to torque, tilt and vibration.

Yap, that's the deal. I read somewhere that it's more advisable to have it mounted corrctly.
Probably if it's not well balanced or something some parts of the HD may wear faster than others and lower the lifetime of it ?
Guess I'm gonna need to buy some drills...
Has somebody did that?

Nah, don't bother drilling new holes. The drives are far more robust than desktop drives (they're desiged to be shaken, moved around, etc. -- they are made for mobile devices after all).

All you need to do to ensure you're safe is to insulate the cradle near the rightmost part with a strip of electrical tape. Some notebook drives have components that might touch the end of the cradle when they're mounted with the only two screws that line up.

I know what you mean by the holes not lining up, some drives have a different screw placement (actually all newer drives have a different placement than older laptop drives) this does not effect the functionality and reliability of these drives in an Amiga 1200 in any way.

LOL! Ok I get the message :-D

I can give you the page where I read that if I find it. I 'm not up to date with recent HD's so....

Maybe there should be a pick up of the most weird /lame questions that have been asked. Should be a good read. Some of mine included  :-D

Not that I was gonna drill the motherboard and processor :-P

My favorite real story (related to me by Jesse Wong who I worked with at AST) was the lady who called  the tech support people at Packard Bell with a "broken coffee cup holder" and demanded it be replaced under warranty. Tech support had no idea what "part" she was talking about and referred it to marketing. After this support question was forwarded around the offices trying to find out if there ever was such a promotion as a coffee cup holder for any Packard Bell machine sold, she was asked to describe what was "obviously" 3rd party accessory.

"It's on the front of my machine, it's tan l ike the rest of the computer so I KNOW IT'S FROM YOU PEOPLE. There is a button you press that makes it come out so you can set your cup on it, and you push it again to make it go back in when you aren't using it. But now it won't go back in, it's broken and I want a new one. This computer has a 3 year warranty you know."

She was using her CDROM tray as a coffee cup stand...

I've drilled new holes in all of mine to mount it correctly.  If you use the existing holes the drive will be hanging off the edge of the tray.  It takes a few minutes to do the job right.  (that said I ran out of space in my A1200 and I now have it mounted with tape, but...)
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

i found this which is slightly off topic, but ever wanted to have a silent A1200? no drives buzzing or clattering away....

and sizes up to 4Gb (over 512Mb / 1Gb prices go crazy for compact flash cards)

Minibox.com

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

Yap, that's the deal. I read somewhere that it's more advisable to have it mounted corrctly.

A couple of months ago I needed to mount my new 3.5" Western Digital HD vertically instead of horizontally in my PC as is normal. I checked with Western Digital about this and how it would affect the drive and they said that it doesn't matter at all how you mount it, you can mount it anyway you like, even upside down if you wish without any consequences for the drive whatsoever.

Speaking of funny stories, one good friend of mine is a student soooo poor, that after his cooling fan died, he didn't have money to buy a new one, so he found a new way of cooling his CPU... watercooling!!! He placed a sealed, water-filled nylon bag on top of the heatsink! It has been working great for a couple or three days, until a hole was cut on the bag........ ouch :-x !

edit: forgot to say, he had all the components spread on the desk!

... I'm just shaking my head in disbelief ... that's just so amazingly stupid ...

Oh well. Sorry if someone feels offended now, but seriously. Common sense is something that everyone has.. Just stop to think for a while.

Yep  ;-)  I used my old 20GB drive to "hang on" cables, lay in "belly up" position, stand position, think every possible positions, and it still rocks
