Dead Progressive 2000-040

Yeah, the guy who sold me the A2000 cleaned it..

So, looking with proper light, I can see that the two broader tracks near the battery were affected by the acid, but the tester shows that they are still working.

The battery has some salt on the negative pole, so I guess it's still leaking acid and I must remove it, right? How do I do that? Is it safe to use a solder to unsolder it?

What can I use to clean the remaining acid on the board?

Will the A2000 still work without the battery? Maybe I can replace it with a coin battery.. and btw, it's surprising that after more than 15 years, the battery shows 3,78v.

Get that battery out of there NOW before it does more damage. Simplest way is to rock it back and forth untill the legs crack and break. If you have a good soldering iron, use it with a bit of fresh solder to flow the legs and pull them out while the solder is still molten, one side at a time.

Crud from the battery damages the legs and sockets of the 68000 CPU. You will need to clean the 68000 pins and possibly replace the 68000 socket, as I have had to do many times before.

yes turn it rightaway with battery leakage and dont turn on again till you removed it
as l managed to destroy one amiga 2000 in mint condition l think wasint ever used
that way aghhhhh and amiga 4000 l brought died after 1 o mins with same issue
clean with something that will evaportate not leave any residue . tiny bit water baking soda whould netulise the acid l whould have thought

Ok, first of all, the PPS 2000-040 is a very nice 040 board ( I have 2 of them ).  Make sure that the Kickstart in your Amiga 2000 is 2.04 and that you are using either Workbench 2.04 or 2.1.  The PPS 2000-040 board does not work properly with Kickstart / Workbench 3.x.  The board requires at least 4 megs of ram installed to work.  The memory are 30-pin SIMMs 1 meg or 4 meg non-parity (2 or 8 chips).  3 chip or 9 chip (pc) SIMMS will not work properly.  The best SIMMs to use are out of old Macintoch computers.  The jumpers on the top of the board must be set correctly.  You will need the manual for this or I can tell you how to set them.
 
Looks like there is corrosion in the 68000 socket.  So, it should be replaced.
 
After unsoldering the battery (do not rock it or break it free), clean the board with 99% IA and 100% cotton pads.  Do not use anything else.
 
Check inside the processor slot with a flashlight.  Make sure that all of the contacts are shiny.  If some are dull, then the processor slot will have to be replaced.  Leaking batteries can "pop" or "splash" their corrosive paste to nearby areas of the board.

I have an A2000 with this accelerator with 32 Mb RAM, and it runs great with 3.1 installed!  I received this computer like this, so I am not sure what the original owner went through - (Any comments Tone007? )

The easiest thing would be to try the 040 board in another 2000? this would eliminate the base 2000 as the problem. There could be many things that can go wrong with the 040 board. bad pals,roms have gone bad(bit rot),bad oscillator,etc. 040 may be toast.. swap the easiest stuff first.

The PPS040 runs fine with KS3.1/OS3.1.  The only gotcha to this board that I can recall is the only memory that is autoconfigured is what you set on the jumpers (up to 8mb, I believe,) you'll need to load the software to access the rest of it.

Stuck in the 3.1 ROM, stuck in the accelerator, booted 3.1 install floppy.  Maybe there are different revisions/ROMs on these boards?
