Using ANY amiga as a main computer?
« on: September 24, 2010, 08:55:24 AM »
We had this thread about classic amigas.

If we expand the definition to include morph, os4 and aros as well as classics, how many use a form of amiga as their primary computer or the computer they use most of the time, at least ?

What do you do on said computer?

I still to this very day use my A1200 for everything except the net, until about 3 months ago I'd never owned any other type of computer then I bought this old iMac that I only use to be online.

Every other computing need is still done on my Amigas, even the editing of gfx & sound for my new site is done on the miggy, then uploaded to the net via the mac.

It may change though when I buy a new pc that folk here kindly advised me on, I doubt it though, but only time will tell... :)

Recently I was forced to sell my Mini MorphOS because of fund shortages.  So right now I'm forced into Winix world (which sucks that is why I am here).

But in a couple of months as I change a job, I plan getting an NG Amiga back home.  I consider low-end Sam but also, this could be MorphOS notebook (depends of time for the support).  Then, the said machine will become my main home computer (as it actually was with the ssaid Mini).  I also have AROS preinstalled but even if I get wifi, it will be just a toy, like UAE since my audio driver isn't working.
Was: Mac Mini PPC running MorphOS 2.4
Now: Amiga Forever 2010 with AmiKit and AmigaSYS
Not used: Icaros Desktop 1.2 (reason: no wifi)
Planned soon: an OS4 system
Shortly then: a MOS notebook (wifi is a must-have)

I stopped using an Amiga as a main system back in '98. Haven't been using real classic HW since '03.
I did make a serious attempt at using Workbench as my main OS through UAE, although that failed; there simply wasn't any capable web browser at that time.

Now that the Amiga browser situation has improved somewhat I might give it another try, but the lack of Java support and the fact that using any other web browser than Opera gives me naussea, makes it unlikely.

I use a PC at work, but at home it's the AmigaOne that gets used these days. Since OWB matured I've barely used my PC, but my Linux EEE-PC 900 gets used for web-browsing when I'm away from the Amiga.

At home my main computer is microAmigaOne with 256MB RAM. It does the jobs I want from it very well, so I did not have the need to buy another computer machine.

I've just started using an A1200 for my day to day computing.  So far things are going very well;  I've not needed to turn on the Linux PC for a week now!  It's amazing just how usable these machines are, despite their age!

What are the specs of that beast? I assume you're either using a PPC-card or that you aren't browsing the web much. :)

PPC card, 030 or 060 are pretty much the same for browsing the internet.
The problem comes from outdated browsers (Ibrowse, AWeb) rather than CPU.

Anyway, i can say my A1200 gets almost as much up time as my laptop Toshiba Win 7 these days.
And of course i browse the web with it, but that's limited to amiga related sites and amiga forums.
10 Classic Amiga Computers so far: I have too many computers!!

I think most people need to view or edit pictures, browse the internet, write email, and whatever. Classic amiga fails horribly at browsing in my view, but when you consider what kinda browsing you can do on a windows 3.1 machine, well then its not so bad.

I think an amiga makes a nice second computer, sitting next to your main. Do creative things on it,play games, or whatever, but a main computer?
I don't think so.

I do all my coding, playtesting, and gfx editing on my mighty A1200T.  So I guess that makes it my main computer.
Wanna try a wonderfull strategy game with lots of handdrawn anims,
Magic Spells and Monsters, Incredible playability and lastability,
English speech, etc. Total Chaos AGA

I'm using an A1200 with 50Mhz 68030 and 16Mb RAM.

My daily computing needs are email, FTP, basic web broswing (I could probably survive with lynx/links), email and ssh/telnet.  Perhaps this doesn't make me a typical modern day user - but on a daily basis I don't need to transcode video files or do anything hugely CPU intensive.

iBrowse seems to manage ok.  I dont' spend all my day on facebook/youtube and I was amazed at just how responsive it was running webmail (Squirrelmail).

If gimp and openoffice [1] were ported to 68k AmigaOS I'd probably never need to switch on the PC again!  Although, switching from Amiga to PC does make me appreciate how much we take high res displays for granted nowadays.

[1] I do realise both these apps would be near impossible on a 68k Amiga ... especially OpenOffice :s

I did hear rumours of an OWB port for 68k?   This would have at least understood CSS.

The current website doesn't mention non PPC Amiga though ... :s
