Crashing Amiga After Upgrade
« on: September 24, 2010, 03:21:49 AM »
Hi guys, I recently put a A2091 card /w HDD in my A2000 (was bone stock) and upgrade the Kickstart to 2.1. However I'm now getting corrupted icons in Workbench 2.1 and if the appear, the computer crashes to guru meditation. What could cause this? Also, other mem is 0, but graphics mem is some value (forgot exactly).

First check your battery hasn't leaked.
Second are your workbench disks original or pirate versions?

I have to check the roms but the guy said it was the last version (v6 or 7 I think?). It was a bunch of stuff I got from a senior fellow who used to be a Amiga hobbyist with his son, got tons of stuff and he seems to know his stuff. Havn't check the HDD size but I am sure it's less the 525mb (Is a Quantum ProDrive LPS, came in only 3 sizes).

No corrosion that I know of and first thing I did when I got the amiga was remove the battery. Plus this didn't happen till after the upgrade.

All original disks, again from the guy. I tried the 1.3 disks that came with the A2000, 2.1 (original), and even 2.05 from an old A600. Same effect happens.

BTW, the A2091 was pulled from another A2000 I got from that guy, which died from corrosion. However this shouldn't effect the card right?

At university right now but iirc the first byte was something like 8000 000B or a variation of that such as 8000 0003.

We need to narrow down the problem to either the 2091 or the Kickstart. Start by putting your 1.3 chip back in, so that the only change from before the upgrade will have been the addition of the 2091.

Sadly can't do it until I get back home. The 2.1 version was a guess however I am not sure. It might be a 2.0. The rom was from that corroded mobo.

Ok here is a quick update. Put the 1.3 rom back in, and the HD still pops up with graphic errors and the system crashes.

Took the card out, the system doesn't seem to run with any problems.

I just read on the ROM that is was v2.04 37-175.

Put it back ROM in w/o the hdd card, loaded 2.1, worked with no problems.

So I guess we know the culprit, it's the HDD card. Now what could have caused it to corrupt graphics like that? Could it be the card or is it the hard drive itself? BTW the roms on the card are labeled v7.081.

Update:

Just tested a second hdd, and it worked fine! Huh weird. Maybe the hard drive is corrupted? I don't know why it would crash the system though if the floppy was being read.

Power supply issue by the sounds of it. I've seen microATX and old PCs with similar issues (CD ROM access, game starting, even just using all USB ports). I found when Windows rebooted it may have corrupt system files or registry that were being accessed at the time of the failure.

It could also be dodgy or loose RAM that as the machine heats up or vibrates it expands causing shorts...

Well I guess I will use 61mb hdd that works. BTW I formatted the HDD using the Format Disk command under icons, but now it has a floppy icon. How do I set it to a HDD icon?

Added: Well seems the problem is still there, but less frequent. This is getting frustrating!

I had HDInstall running when I tried opening the folder for HDTools, which caused the graphics glitch and crash.

I've had a SCSI drive with a corrupted card before.  That's no fun.  Remember that SCSI harddrives have their own little embedded controller on them that accelerates some functions and if that goes a little crazy, you could have problems.  Sometimes certain dodgy SCSI drives don't work with certain SCSI controllers.

If the problem still occurs (as you said it did) with a different hard drive, try swapping to a bigger power supply as brownb2 said.

Oh, and you can open the .info file in the root directory of the hard disk in the icon editor to make changes.

Yea I tried installing WB2.1 but the whole system crashed half way. I don't have any power supplies to use with the Amiga, except for another A2000 psu from the corroded one. What saddens me is I don't know if it's the HDD, the card, or some internal RAM problem like brown said. The HDD was originally attached to the card so I don't see how it would not be compatible.

Thanks for your help everyone

Is there any RAM on the 2091? Make sure the RAM jumper is set to the correct size. There are also some chips on the 2091 that can be reseated, so give that a try (carefully). The errors you're describing don't sound like they could be termination related, but check that as well.

No ram chips installed and jumper is set to 0. Not sure what you mean on termination.
