filesystem for KS1.3
« on: September 16, 2010, 09:11:39 AM »
(I might have asked this one already, sorry)

What filesystem would you recommend for harddisk on KS1.3?
I need it for A1000 as its hard to softkick KS2+ on it.

ok, thanks.
is that with or without directorycaching?
what version?

You would want the plain version, without directory caching and without the international mode enabled.

Now this may be getting difficult at this point, but for the FastFileSystem to work under Kickstart 1.3 you have to put the original FastFileSystem file that shipped on Workbench 1.3 into the hard disk's configuration data, as stored on the disk by the HDToolBox command.

You can recognize the original FastFileSystem by its size (it should be less than 20 KBytes in size, if I remember correctly) and entering the "version file FastFileSystem" shell command should show you a version number in the range 34 to 35 (I do not exactly remember which one). If your FastFileSystem file is much larger than 20 KBytes, or the version number shown is in the range 37-40 (or higher) then it cannot be used under Kickstart 1.3.

If you partitioned your hard disk under Kickstart 2.x or 3.x then HDToolBox will probably have put a version of FastFileSystem on the hard disk which will not work under Kickstart 1.3. You should check, remove the new version if necessary, and replace it with the old Kickstart 1.3-compatible variant.

Note that these check/remove/replace operations need to take place within the HDToolBox program, which manages the partitioning process. This is definitely not the same as copying the FastFileSystem file to a partition.

From personal experience, you might want to use HDInstTools (check AmiNet, v6.9 should be the last stable one) to recognize disk geometry, edit partition(s) and load proper filesystem into RDB. It has more control over configuration process that might be more valued later, if some problem arises.

I am aware that you should know best because you have the possibility to look at the source code, but nevertheless I have to disagree here. FFS V40.1 works well on Kick 1.3 in INTL mode, at least for reading. The only disadvantage is that each partition gets a second icon labelled DH0: DOS[].

HDInstTool is the only partioning tool for the Amiga which does *not* work correctly. It works as long as you accept the geometry it calculates but as soon as you try to use a different geometry or even worse if you try to edit a partition table created by another tool, it fails miserably, usually deleting all partitions.

Regarding control, HDToolbox is the tool which gives control about everything in the partition table. HDInstTool does not give as much control. And if a problem arises, HDInstTool is the last tool to use because of the reason mentioned above.

HDInstTool is only good if you are absolutely sure that you never used a different program to edit the partition table you want to edit now.

I'm sure you right; HDInstTools is nowhere near the HDToolBox on WB3.5+, but it worked for me, obviously, since I used it exclusively on my KS/WB 1.3 setup.
@Orange - I stand corrected, Thomas has strong args against HDInstTools, you should be on safe side with HDToolBox.
