« on: September 13, 2010, 10:56:20 PM »
Hi to all ,a few months ago i had never heard of the Amiga let alone used one ,so when i was given the Amiga 1200 in exchange for one of my hard drives ,i had no clue as how i was going to use it,untii i came on to this wonderful forum ,and so many kind folk gave help freely ,and i was eager to learn, and knew i was going to find it hard ,and it really must have been my lucky day ,because  along comes this guy who i did not know, and said i can teach you every thing you need to know, and what i dont know, folk on this forum will help, and i jumped at the chance ,day after day, mistake after mistake on we went ,and if i got it wrong ,his words were,we start again, and we did ,untill he had taught me a basic knowledge of the Amiga ,and i am quite sure you know this Gentleman, whom i will be forever grateful too for the help he has given me ,it was my now dear friend Franko ,yes you my friend i thank you so much for all you have done, any ways i told Franko i wanted to go on the net,and he said he would help if he could, but he had not been on the net with his amiga,so first thing i did was ring o2 my internet provider, who gave me all i needed,to get on the net, they were brilliant and very eager once they knew that i intended to get the old Amiga on line, so on i went weeks passed ,and still no internet i must have input ever number known to mankind ,Franko said if you ever get on line that i could help him when he goes on lol in desperation i went back to o2 and this brilliant guy gave me some more numbers, and i input them ,and within a instant, my Amiga was downloading and surfing the net like a pro, oh boy was i thrilled ,and she surfs real well,im using ibrowser 2.4 which seems ok and works very well,i have 32 mbs of ram,and this could be a long night, because im off to surf the net now lol my thanks to all and a special thanks to my friend Franko who is a star  ,and thanks to o2 for doing there bit ,very best wishes Brian:):):):):):)

Just a shame the return key doesn't work eh? ._.

I remember having an PPC A1200 with like 6MB of something back in the 90s pretty amazing how internet pages have changed over time.  Back then you was lucky if a web page had a background image. lol

Miami and iBrowser... ahh simpler times

6MB on a PPC board? They only appeared in like 1996 or so, by then you could get 64MB reasonably. I know, because that's what I had on mine.

Then I bumped into this feller here called Haymiggan and the next thing I know, I had 256MB on it :)

It's been most enjoyable helping you out MrMoonlight. It's been really refreshing to find someone who is totally new to the Amiga and who has so much enthusiasm about the wonders of the Amiga. :)

I reckon by your enthusiasm and willingness you have shown for learning about the Amiga, you can look forward to many years of pleasure this machine will bring you. :)

I have to say your a very pleasant and patient man, as 16+ hours talking on the phone with me & my broad scottish accent can't have been easy. I reckon we could have solved your problems in half the time if subtitles were available via the phone... :roflmao:

Good luck with your new Amiga and don't give up when you get stuck, myself and plenty of others here on Amiga.org will be only to glad to help you out. :)

That's excellent news.  I hope to do the same with my A1200, but I currently have motherboard issues and a faulty accelerator to deal with.  I *will* get on the net with the A1200 though - it just may take a while ;)

I'm always here with my A1200 (when I'm here between breaks) & it's fun man, I agree! :D

Have fun, but don't forget the Return key...that was kind of hard to read! hehehe :)

Hey Brian, I'm glad you got your Amiga online. I am sorry that I didn't have time to reply to your private message before you ended up solving the problem with Franko's help, I am often overwhelmed with private messages on the Amiga forums and it can take me a while to reply to everyone sometimes. I hope you continue to learn the ins and outs of the Amiga Operating System and enjoy trying out all the brilliant online software we have. Don't forget to check out AmiTwitter, AmiMSN, AmiNetRadio, AmiGift, AmiTradeCentre, and Dynamite!

Thank you very much, Franko, for doing such a great job of helping out! It is indeed refreshing to see people without much previous Amiga experience taking a new interest in them, and we all have to do what we can to make them feel welcome and want to keep using their Amigas.

mrmoonlight: Congrats on getting your miggy online! Granted, web surfing on a classic miggy can be slow and troublesome with some sites, but still darn handy, especially for Aminet downloads :)

{Note Return key pressed}

Your Internet provider is much nicer than mine..... I remember asking Earthlink's tech. support for the DNS numbers.... a nightmare... I finally typed, "Who cares what kind of !#$$^$@$$&*%$ computer it is, what are the damn DNS numbers??????

Also, I only call Telnet BBS's on my miggies, tried Telnet on the PC, it just doesn't 'feel right' ... :)

I think someone mistook me for a man in another thread so I chose an avatar I hoped would make it more obvious that I'm not.

I keep pushing off getting a wireless card for my miggy. I really should take the jump on that.

Good for you, man. The PCMCIA slot on the A1200 makes a little easier to get online hardwarewise as compared to big box Amigas.

@ Cammy: Yup, pretty obvious now...

After helping out MrMoonlight to solve some of his problems, he kindly sent me some screens shots of his Amiga using the net. I was quite impressed by the results. :)

Despite the fact that I've only ever used amiga's for over 20 years I have never actually used one to go online. But after seeing what MrM can do with his, and thanks to some great advice from Cammy from a recent thread advising me what I need to buy, I have finally decided to buy the bit & bobs required and get at least one of my miggy's on the net. :)

MrMoonlight is now proficient enough to help me figure out what to do when I come to set mine up for the net, even after 20 odd years of using Amigas on a daily basis I am still learning new things about this wonderful machine thanks to the help of others on here. To me that's what the real spirit of being a member of the Amiga community is all about, long may it continue... :)

Hi Franko,

I'm looking at doing exactly the same - only I see AmigaKit no longer have PCMCIA network cards in stock (and for once - none found on ebay!).   I also need confirmation that my Apollo 1230 with >4Mb RAM won't conflict with my PCMCIA interface.

Hopefully more of us will be online with our Miggies soon :)
