Installing OS3.9 on an A4000T
« on: September 12, 2010, 12:48:02 PM »
I reformatted my OS3.9 partition and did a fresh install of OS3.9 (Did NOT install 3.1 first)

I rebooted but it will only get to the AmigaDOS screen and wont boot up.

I typed in LOADWB in dos but it said "invalid resident library"

I am guessing this might be happening because the A4000T unlike other Amiga's needs some sort of special Workbench installation.

Now, i do NOT have the original WB 3.1 disks of the A4000T, but rather i have original ones of an A1200 (which are of no use)

Any way i can fix this, maybe i need a certain file or something?

EDIT: Oh if this helps in any way, i have Workbench 3.1 installed on another partition. Maybe i can take a file from there?
EDIT 2: Workbench.library IS present in Libs
EDIT 3: There is no Startup-sequence for some reason

I haven't used an A4000 for years now, I only use A1200s these days, obvious question here are your roms 3.1 ?...

One of the best utils for tracing such faults like this is SnoopDos, but as you can't boot up you'll probably need to create a separate floppy for SnoopDos and run it that way. It should help you find which library is causing the problem... :)

Is it possible because i used the following scenario to install:

Booted using Workbench 3.1 partition
Deleted OS3.9 partition (using HDtoolbox)
Re-created OS3.9 partition
Rebooted (Into my Workbench 3.1 partition)
Formatted OS3.9 partition
Installed OS3.9 onto OS3.9 partition (while booted in the WB 3.1 partition)

Boot from 3.1 partition, create 3.9 emergency boot disk, boot from emergency disk, install 3.9 to 3.9 partition.

Emergency disk is the very first option in the installer. Why do all people think they may skip it?

Because we didn't think there was going to be an emergency with such a "simple" request to install an OS?

On a serious note... the last 3.9 installation I had that included an A2000/060 setup, the Emergency Disk would fail upon creation toward the end. Don't know what exactly it had a problem with (060 libs and CD drivers were all there), but I got around it and figured how to install the OS another way. And honestly, I can't remember a time when the 3.9 Emergency Disk ever worked, on any configuration of mine be it an A1200 or 4000 (have yet to try it on my A3000). Surely I can't be the only one with this luck?

The emergency boot disk always worked for me on my heavily expanded A1200 tower - I'd recommend at least giving that a try. IIRC the thing that's missing from A4000 ROMs is workbench.library - maybe try version workbench.library in the shell and see what it comes up with? It might need to be copied over from the 3.1 partition...

No no, 3.9 comes with brand new workbench.library, and it not being on A4000T kickstart is a good thing.

As a Plus, Emergency disk can be created with drivers for additional SCSI, video, Ide, sound, etc. Saves a lot of time setting up your system should you want to reinstall without looking for additional driver disks and such. Very helpfull with mediator based systems. Boot emergency disk, with 3.9 in cd drive, and install is done in one shot.

I just had a go... I booted in 3.1. I created an OS3.9 Emegancy disk and then booted with that and installed 3.9 on the 3.9 partition.

But once i reboot i am getting the same thing, as in all i am getting is the AmigaDOS screen and nothing else.

So i am booting up with the Emergancy disk again and took a look in the OS3.9 partition and notice the following problems.

A: The only folders that are not hidden are DEVS and EXPANSION. The rest are all hidden.

B: there is NO startup-sequence in the S folder.

What could be wrong? The installation went fine and there is nothing wrong with the cd i used as it is the original cd and iv used it before on this Amiga and on my old A4000D and on my A1200.

EDIT: For some reason it seems to have copied a lot of files and folders into another partition.... I am copying everything onto the OS3.9 partition and ill try rebooting again. Will post the results.

Ok. Copying the files on to the OS3.9 partition worked.

With the newly formatted and installed OS3.9 partition, i dont seem to seem to be getting those freezing problems i talked about in another thread some time ago. :)

Good to hear :)  Why are you using internal IDE though? Use SCSI or Deneb :) Both faster :)

I am. I'm using the A4000T's internal SCSI. Both the HD and CDROM are SCSI.

Ahh ok nice!  Are you going to get a Deneb? Where did you get the 4000T from?

I might get a Deneb once i have some money, i like the idea of using a USB external HD and pen drives.

I bought the A4000T from a friend of mine locally (Malta). It was originally used by a local TV station in Malta, hence there is still some stuff like Scala installed on the Workbench 3.1 partition. It is a lovely machine, very upgradable and by far my favorite Amiga i have ever owned.

I have never created an emergency disk and never had any problem installing os3.9.  But there again i know what I am doing
