Nasty problem in OS3.9
« on: September 05, 2010, 09:40:58 PM »
For some reason all of a sudden OS3.9 is giving me major hassle.

Once the OS screen came up it was saying "Attempting to load program WBCLOCK" and would freeze

So i rebooted with no startup sequence and deleted WBCLOCK from WBSTARTUP

Then next reboot it said "Attempting to load program Amiboing" and freeze again

So i deleted Amiboing from WBStartup

Now its saying "Attempting to load program C:Mount" and freezing again

WTF???

How can i fix this?

Virus?

I suppose there still are amiga viri in the wild. My first suggestion would be to see if the system is bootable from any other medium.

The problem seems to be when OS 3.9 tries to launch stuff in WBSTARTUP as just before it freezes it does show OS3.9 desktop

What file system are you using on your hard drive?

I've seen this lately with PFS2, it usually means the media my boot partition sits upon is starting the slide to oblivion.  My SCSI drives are rather old.  I've had to re-think the way I organize and protect data.  For your sake, I hope I'm wrong.

Do you have backups?

AFAIK the file system is SFS. I bought my A4000T from a friend of mine and i believe that he had formatted it as SFS. I never touched the formatting as if i remember right it already had a fresh install of OS3.9.

What i can say is that when the problem started (Attempting to load program WBCLOCK) i would reboot or else switch off and on again and the problem would go away and it would load up properly. It started this about a week ago. I thought the problem had to do with a failing Clock battery.

Yesterday when i tried rebooting or off/on again the problem remained and now my OS3.9 installation is what one can say totally unusable as it freezes as soon as the "Attempting to load......" thingy comes up.

Should i try renaming the WBSTARTUP folder to something else and see what happens or is there something else i can try?

I have another partition with Workbench 3.1 on the same hard drive. Should i try booting with that instead and use some tool to fix 3.9 ?

Any help would be appreciated.

That's a good starting point; then launch the items there one by one and look what happens.

You can also try WBStartup+ that fixed some of my freezing problems with WBStartup-items quite a while ago. You should check your partitions (especially WB) with some viri-checker like VirusZIII. There are also other viruscheckers for download.

UPDATE:

I booted with no startup-sequence and renamed the WBSTARTUP to WBSTART.

Rebooted and OS3.9 booted up properly with no crashes. Of course the Dock and other stuff from WBSTARTUP did not load up.

When i double clicked the dock that opened up fine, but anything else such as MagicMenu and other stuff from that folder are causing the Amiga to freeze.

I havent done any further testing or checkups as i didnt have enough time this morning.

You have not really described what you mean with "freeze", is it total hang, or is mouse and intuition alive?

I'd try to isolate the real problem first. Boot while pressing alt key to have loadwb skip wbstartup, and then check out the program in wbstartup, for example...
* do they start if you start them manually by double clicking them?
* do they have "Wait till finished" checked?
* are the protection bits sane?

OK, that works, but you could just have pressed ALT key instead :)

Nothing works.. Without WBSTARTUP it boots into OS3.9 but if i try and run anything it just freezes. By freezing i mean the screen remains the same and i cannot move the mouse pointer and no error messages. Nothing. Even WHDLoad wont work. Some stuff works. SYSINFO worked for example. EASYADF loaded but wont quit and wont do anything but the Amiga is not crashed or frozen.

Sounds like a RAM or Libs problem to me

I booted into my Workbench 3.1 partition and it seems to be working perfectly into 3.1 but OS 3.9 is with the problems mentioned above :S

This is really frustrating me now

Even MagicMenu works fine in 3.1 but is freezing my 3.9 (along with the other programs that are also freezing it). It used to work perfectly in 3.9
