ATX Adaptor for A1200
« on: August 16, 2010, 10:33:32 PM »
Ok. I looked at Amiga Maniacs website.. I am interested in the ATX adaptor since I will be running an 040 board in my A1200 and maybe a subway or other clockport adaptor in the future. How would I power on the A1200? Do I need a power supply with a switch on the back, or do I need to wire one up to the cable somehow? I'm new to that.. so any info on setting that up would be appreciated!

You know there at least a couple of adpters out there that do this tidy and easy.

And Nathan (amigamaniac.com) has a cheap one, works good. You could have the ATX PSU external and
put it in some kind of safe housing. With amigamaniac one, an ATX PSU with a switch would work perfect, as
it is setup with a jumper set to ON already.

I have Amigamaniac's ATX adapter as well as his new 3.0 Svideo adapter.

The adapter comes with a jumper. I happened to have 400watt fan-less PSU and it has a switch so I just use that. I just leave the jumper connected. I was thinking of going with Pico-PSU.

It seems like the svideo adapter was the straw that broke the camels back as far as my EURO 220v stock PSU with 45watt Step-up converter. Before that I was doing ok with 1200/030/40/64MB/8GB SSD/Subway/4xIDE->SATA. Its a good thing I ordered both.

I was thinking of contacting him to see if he would be willing to make a longer ATX cable.

Hi Guys,

I'm about to make and test a new ATX to A500/600/1200 adapter cable that has a little black box on it with a push-on, push off switch :-) It will have a nice black aluminium knob on the end of the switch. Good for PSUs that don't have a switch on them. I will also include that switch on the "big box" ATX adapter cables in future, so that the rod that turns the orginal PSU on and off can turn the ATX PSU on and off via the switch - which happens to be chassis mount :-D The rod may need to be shortened a little though. I've got an A2000, A3000 & A4000 at my place at the moment that I'm repairing for a guy in Australia (replacing all the capacitors, and trying to get the non-functioning A2000 working again), so I'll be able to see how the switch goes with them :-)

@Tripitaka

How do you think I learned to make cables for myself? :-D Stedman is almost like a god to me :-P Not everyone can solder though, or has the equipment. In many cases, it would work out cheaper and easier to buy a ready made cable from me or someone else.

@bbond007

I can make you a longer cable, with heatshrink on it - I need to update my website. I made a longer one for another guy before. All I did was use the regular length of heatshrink tubing (i.e., 60cm), then another length of whatever length was required (up to 60cm), rather than one single length. It works great! :-D Keep in mind that you don't want the cable too long howevever, as it will start acting like an aerial, and perhaps introduce more "noise" into your Amiga :-S

P.S. Oh, just in case you're wondering who the devil I am, I'm "amigamaniac". I really need to change my freakin' user name on here :-S

I have a fully functional A2000 here so if you need any measurements or help Nathan, just ask.

if someone is clever enough their can build a second rocker switch into the power supply itself by cutting a small hole into the power supply,so you can activate the ps-on without some switch hanging of some wire externally.

Is there an adapter around that works with the power button on ATX cases? Most adapters seem to come with their own AT style on/off switch, which doesn't fit into my project.

i must admit i did a modifcation on a power supply about 14 years ago,i could not put-up with all those cables coming out of the unit,so i cut all the cables and modifyed it with 4x sockets. the plug were made of metal so it was earth out. each socket was 7 pin if i remember and the plug lock in the socket.

but what was best about this power supply i built a 50w 25x25w power amp inside. this worked fantasic as the orginal fan kept the heatsink on the power amp cool.

there was not a single cable to be seen all sockets.

audio can be access from any of the four sockets on the power supply along with all the voltage to power-up any unit upto 12v.

WARNING! there may be high voltage inside a power supply.
