WHDLoad and Workbench problems
« on: August 13, 2010, 05:06:54 AM »
Hello,
On my A1200 I have a CF HD adaptor, which I installed so that I can easily swap CF drives without opening the Amiga (so that I can have different setups to use as I need). I currently use 2 4GB CF cards. One is a standard Workbench 3.0 (with some additions), the other is the "Classic Workbench Advanced" 3.1. On both I have the latest WHDLoad (registered). On both, there is the exact same set of Kickstart files in devs/Kickstarts.
With the older WB, WHDLoad works great with all the games, while with the 3.1 ClassicWB, on some games it says that the file kick40068.A1200 is invalid, and quits. But the Devs/Kickstarts folder is exactly the same (I also re-copied it from scratch to be sure), so what's going on? I also reinstalled WHDLoad and restored a blank prefs file, but no joy. Any idea?

Second problem: again with the ClassicWB. On some folders (I.E. my PCMCIA CF card kit, but others too) it only shows some files. Even if I choose "Show all files". And worse, even some sub-folders which HAVE an .info file, and which show up OK in the other WB installation, are not visible. But if I select "Show as text" instead of as icons, I can see them. What the heck? When I select "Show all files", shouldn't it show ALL files?
I'd think the WB install was botched in some way, but it's freshly installed with no modification, so I wonder why this is happening...

TIA
Cristian

Try to boot without startupseq with the OS it isnt working with and try to launch a game from shell. If that doesnt work it could perhaps be a maxtransfer issue.

rename kick40068.A4000 to kick40068.A1200. you probably have a bad file.

@fryguy: I'll try that as soon as I get home, thank you. But the games that don't need that kickstart work fine, so I have no high hopes...
@amiga92571: I tried that, without results. And by the way the exact same Kickstarts folder (repeatedly copied over) works well on the other WB.

I tried with a clean startup, still doesn't work. I get the same error.
Why is it that this WB sees that file as invalid, while the other WB sees it as good?!? :( I am sure it's not a corrupted file, because I copied the "bad" one over to the "good" WB, and it still works.

When files become invalid. It has problem with your Maxtransfer rate. you need to lower it to 00x1fe00 in HDToolbox.

Maybe my manual will help you with your WHDLoad problem:

Thanks, I'll try that tonight. Do you know if that might fix my other Workbench problem too, as per my original post?

Just to be sure, how do I change the Maxtransferrate in HDToolBox? I'll only have a few minutes tonight to try this, so I'd like to do it straight away without experimenting! :)

It should be pretty easy to find it, but i can't check because i'm not at home. You should be able to change maxtransfer without having to reformat the disk (but if you have anything important on it you should backup the stuff anyway).

Whoa, the maxtransfer setting did the trick (or so it seems, I didn't test thoroughly but a few games that definitely weren't working, work now)!! Thank you so much for your help!
The other WB issue is still there though. When I put a CF card in my PCMCIA adaptor, on the old WB it works OK, on the other it only shows a few files/folders even if I select "Show all files" (it doesn't show even the ones that have an info file). If I choose "Show icons only" then I see nothing at all except two small dots (they're two one-pixel dots, not the graphic dot you get when there's an invalid icon).
