More Amiga probs - Apollo 030 & Jaz
« on: August 07, 2010, 09:55:57 PM »
Tried my A1200 again, I still can's move up and down with the mouse so Amiga-up and Amiga-down has to do.

Anyway, I have a 50MHz 030 Apollo card with extra RAM.  The extra memory wasn't showing up so I decided to investigate.  Turns out there was none plugged into it!  I grabbed some plugged it in and ..it didn't show up, so I tried some different Simms and they didn't work either.

Don't know what's going on there but there is one component that looks like it's expanding, my guess is it's a battery but it hasn't done any damage yet - or has it??

The real purpose of my experiment however was to try and get a Jaz drive (1GB removable) working.
I tried to connect it up but it's not playing ball at all.  I've tried various settings but it's just not showing up.  Same thing on my PC.

I also have another Jaz drive I got the other day but it's acting the same, it just does not show up.

Bizarrely the infamously dubious Zip drive ...worked first time.

Are the Jaz and Apollo 030s known for these types of problems ...or is it just old age?

Some Apollo card is very picking on memory. Did you try EDO or FP memory? What you also could do is clean the connectors of the Simm and card with some cleaning alcohol.

Did you have terminated the Jaz drive? Without the SCSI terminator, it won't work. In a Fast SCSI 2 or higher you need active terminators.

Also check the memory jumper on the accelerator: with it wrongly set the memory will never show up.

And Amiga1260 is right: the Apollo is a b!tch regarding which SIMM sticks it will like. EDO is a guessing game, most Fast Page units will work, but they where only made up to 32MB (which are hard to find).

Oh, the Apollo will only accept up to 32Mb SIMM (or 64Mb with the second SIMM socket soldered).
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

The bulging component - what does it look like? It could well be a battery or a capacitor, either way you should probably remove it. It will survive fine without the battery, but if it's a capacitor it'll have to be replaced.

Have you tried a second mouse? The Amiga reads the mouse directly, with 2 lines for vertical and 2 lines for horizontal movement. If either of the lines for vertical movement are broken, all you'll get are single-pixel "twitches" when you try to move it. If another mouse does the same thing, chances are it's a trace or connection on the motherboard that's damaged, or one of the chips...
Engineers do it with precision
