WarpSNES!
« on: July 28, 2010, 08:04:39 PM »
Hi all. I've been playing around with emulators lately, and am impressed by WarpSNES. Version 4 supports sound output and gives me pretty good framerate, so its real fun. However, the latest version from aminet, version 7, doesnt really work. I find it a lot more unstable than v4. Is there a way to get it running better, and/or am I missing much? Because I might aswell stick with 4.0 then.

I do have one other problem with WarpSNES, I dont know in what resolution I should let the emulator run. Also, I know the SNES was capable of 15bit output, and with the -hicolor flag this does seem to work, but I'm getting lots of artifacts that way aswell. Whats the ideal bitdepth for the emulation, and what resolution, too?

Then there's the problem of the filenames of my ROM images. They have spaces in them and all GUI's I've tried have trouble accessing them. Is there a way to quickly remove all spaces from a folder of files? I found the program 'underscore' on Aminet, but it didnt work for me. It works fine from CLI but like I said, I need this GUI because I have quite some rom files.

Hi rvo_nl :)

Sorry I can't help you on this one, but I was wondering if you could help me with a quick question. :)

My A1200 setup is almost identical to yours A1200 Blizzard060/PPC 256Mb etc..
all except the BVision card, I have never managed to track one of those down yet, anyway I have tried warpsnes on mine but in AGA its way too slow, I was just wondering if using the BVision card on your set up, do you manage to get WarpSnes running at full frame speed... :)

Cheers :drink:

no. not full speed. but with frameskip 2 or 3 the game is playable. especially if you turn off sound. a graphicscard greatly speeds up emulation though. and ebay is full of bvisions. try it you wont regret!

If my memory isnt playing tricks with me, I believe that Dgen68k was available once upon a time, for 3.x.
Nowadays it is only OS4 software.

What you're looking for is MultiRen, a powerful renaming tool, specially for annoying PC file-naming conventions ;-)

I`m using an old cli Snes9X WOS port (v 1.26) and it runs fine but I get pauses every now and then. I think it has to do with the contex switches on 3.9/WOS maybe ?

Yep, I ported it about 4 or 5 years ago. Should be on aminet I believe. If it's not let me know and I'll upload it.
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

OK, I did some more testing. First of all, MultiRen is an excellent tool that fixed the filename problem in one minute, so thanks for that.

Then, SNES9X (2.3) + WarpSNES (4.0) gives the best results when emulating SNES games. Could be that WarpSNES (7.0) is not reading some of the settings I made in the GUI, but it just kept running 2 or 3 times slower than the older version. It did have sound output though. I've tried some of the other GUI's using the 7.0 exe, but they were totally unreliable and unstable.

Results: I was a bit annoyed that it didnt run Super Mario World. But it did run some of the other 'big' games like Killer instinct (with some artifacts) and Donkey Kong Country. Speed is not too impressive, but without sound its perfectly playable and games run almost at 100% speed (save for some intensive mode7 stuff)

As for where to get it, no idea. I just had it in my archives for 10 years. Can send it to you if you want. Just pm me your address.
