Trouble in OS version
« on: July 28, 2010, 02:39:55 PM »
Hello.

I have just discovered that my A1200 runs OS 3.0 (version 39.29) while i believed it to use 3.1. This old system, hosted on an internal drive that i passed over from my A600 to my 1200 a few yaers ago, is full of patchs and programs and is associated with the kick 3.1 (version 40.68).
As all is working fine, i hesitate to pass it to 3.1 by reinstalling over my system because of possible conflicts that might occur.
It is so much patched anyway that i do not know what could be the real difference with OS 3.1.
What should i do? Is there any specific file that i could update to get the real 3.1?

libs:version.library

But.. obviously this only changes the Workbench version number displayed, it doesn't bring all other files up to 3.1 level (in case they're for some reason 3.0 ones).

Not quite clear about what your set up is here, are the roms 3.0 or 3.1
The only difference real difference between OS 3.0 and 3.1 are some of the system files are updated and some extra functions mainly to the libs in the roms.

You can run OS3.0 on 3.1 roms, the only disadvantage you'll have, is if you try to use progs that take advantage of the extra functions in the 3.1 roms. They will either not work, partialy work or just crash.

Well, i have KS 3.1 and OS 3.0.
Sure it works, but who would use OS 3.0 nowadays? I have always believed that i installed OS 3.1 all those years ago (can't understand how i have been mistaken as i do not have 3.0 disks anymore).
I will update the version.library, but i am very interested in a list of files that actually are different between OS 3.0 and 3.1.

It should be fine to just run the 3.1 Installer. Commodore's OS upgrades were very good about preserving existing files and settings. It will create the directory SYS:OLD and move unique files there (your startup-sequence and user-startup, for example). You can then reincorporate those changes by hand.

But do a quick backup first, just to be extra safe.

As Franko asked - What ROMs do you have? That should  make the difference on what you should do.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I'll post a list here as soon as i can, it's mostly the files in C: and Libs:
but I'll make a list out for you.

Right now I'm in the middle of installing a new DVD Burner, so I'll have to finish that up first.

Check later for the list, unless someone else out there can do it for you now.

Cheers :drink:

Hi Xanxi

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner, (ran into lots of probs with that DVD Burner !)...

Anyway, here's that list I promised. The only major updates to files from OS3.0 to 3.1 were.

C:Avail,ConClip,Copy,Iprefs,Mount,Protect,Search, SetPatch,Version
L:Porthandler
Libs:AmigaGuide.library,Asl.Library,Commodities.library,DataTypes.Library,IFFPasre.library,Locale.Library,Version.library

Almost all of the files in Prefs: were updated slightly, but as I said before you can run OS3.0 without any probs on KS 3.1, you'll only run into problems when trying to use progs that were written to specifically use these versions of libs or were written to use specific versions in the kickstart roms.

Hope this was the info you were looking for... :)

Cheers :drink:

So you have 3.1 roms and you're running workbench 3.0. Right?

3.1 seemed to be quicker with its display, as I think the graphics.library was different.  Also the monitor drivers are different.

Otherwise I can't think of any patch that REQUIRED workbench 3.0 as opposed to 3.1.  Most things off aminet specified 3.0/3.1.  In fact some 1.3/2.0 stuff that didn't work with 3.0 worked with 3.1. On the whole, I've read 3.1 is MORE compatible than 3.0,  So you should be Ok just installing 3.1 over the top.
