Hi,
I've got a Blizzard in my Amiga 1200 Tower case ('040@25Mhz). As for the fan problem, well I mounted a pc cpu fan (pentium one I think) over the Blizzard card, via a strip of metal plate. Basically one of those pci slot covers, drilled a few holds in it, screwed the fan to one end, the other to the chassis. Everything seems to work fine, had it running for hours without any problems.

Personnally I think my 1200T is going to be religated to the "museum", and I'll buy myself a spanking new G4 AmigaOne when OS 4 comes out. After all I can only hack my 1200 so far!  :-D

@Radfoo:

The original gizmo ;) just seems to hold the filters for the output, so the you will manage without it, if I am not totally wrong the filters are there to make sure the device doesnt interfere with other electronical equipment and can get the FCC-approval.  You should even get a clearer picture without the filters if you make a cable yourself and use ok cabling. Flat cable as used originally by Phase5 and DCE(?) aint really recommended for monitor-signals, they should actually coaxial-cables with an impedance of 75 Ohms for the Red, Green, Blue, Horisontalsync and Verticalsync signals.

Must just say one final thing. As the connector on the BlizzardVision only got 10 pins it is probably contains the five Red, Green, Blue, Horisontalsync and Verticalsync signals plus one ground for each of them, though I am just guessing, but it would not be hard to find out with a multimeter.

Pinout-guess (will look a bit wierd when submitted):

1         9
.  .  .  .  .
.  .  .  .  .
2          10

1 - Red
2 - Red Ground
3 - Green
4 - Green Ground
5 - Blue
6 - Blue Ground
7 - Horisontal Sync
8 - Horisontal Ground
9 - Vertical Sync
10 - Vertical Ground

Ok this is as stated just a guess. The ground-pins of the connector on the BVision are very easy to measure with a multimeter. Just set it to measure resistance in Ohms, connect one of the probes to a known ground on the card, put the other probe on a pin of the connector - if you measure a resistance of about 1 Ohm it should be a ground-pin.

The through-plated big mounting-holes on the BVision should be ground... cant guarantee it though, plug the card in the computer and measure if the holes are connected to the ground of the chassis with the above method to know for sure.

(edit) If you can get hold of a multimeter which can check connections and give a beep if connected this is even simpler :). Usually that selection is among the resistance-measurments on the multimeter and is marked with a diode-symbol.

Good luck!

/Patrik

Don't know if it will be enough, but in my big tower pc I use a 5,25" twin cooler that sits on top of my highest cdrom, and according to the info I get from the motherboard it makes a difference of 15 degrees Celcius when I hook it on. It costed me 20 euro in the local pc store ...

The 25MHz 040 on my BlizzPPC has onnly an old K6-II aluminium heatsink on it. That brings it into physical contact with the side of the case almost, but I have checked it after several hours use and it simply doesnt get that hot.

@Radfoo

IIRC those cable, is a "alluminium foil shielded flat cable" and then anyway, you need the small PCB at the end of the cable.

Try to contact Vesalia or so.

Ciao

EDIT- or if you are rich, http://www.amiga.fr

i.e: 5volt PPC fan= 21,00 EUR

Cool, I have one of those. It is about the only setting I can handle!

I'll have a go later, see what happens :-) .

Yep, I think an 040 is about the same size as a Pentium. The problem is that the CPU is next to the side of the tower leaving little room for a heat sink and fan :-( .

I was going to do that, but instead I got this Eyetech Mk5 tower. It has space for an A1200 and my A1 board :-)  . No room for Zorro or PCI but this PPC/BVision combo should be quite good :-) .

I have a ressurected Apollo 1240 card in my 1200D. I found an old combined 5V fan/heatsink that was almost exactly the same area as the 040 and only 1cm tall in total at a computer fair. It cost me 50p (I wish I's bought a few now).

Anyhoo, its very quiet, gets nice and cool and as the only real downside, is made by intel (/hide). It could be a pentium 1 fan? Not sure.

If you can find such a beast, it would be ideal for your card.

Does it have some garish holographic sticker on the fan motor with the intel logo? If so its the exact same one.

There y' go folks, finally a use for some ancient 486 PC - steal the cooler for your 040's!

dont use too much coolrpaste (read the manual included with the paste before use).

I coated the whole of the top of my 040 before fiting the heatsink.
