Back up tips for windows?
« on: November 27, 2003, 10:06:52 AM »
Hello, I know it's not amiga related, but I need help with this..

I would need to make a daily or hourly backup of a windows directory. For me it is not important to do it on another support, I just need to copy it in another directory of the same harddisk. Better would be to create a different directory everytime, with as the name of the directory the date and time of the back up (if possible).

Is there a easy way to do it? if not, is there a software that you could reccommend me that does it?

Thank you.

P.S. sorry, forgot to say that it should be automatic and transparent, running on background.

Use windows scripting host + windows scheduler.

Search microsoft.com for info on these, it's out of the scope of this site to explain / teach windows scripting..

Another option would be to install cygwin and create a shell script that runs from cron. Again, there are plenty of shell tutorials on the net.

another option if using win2k or winXP is to use the windows backup utility. its basicly a cut down version of Seagate backupexec. this can backup to a file on disk.

another option would be to use the disk administrator to setup mirroring on a 2nd drive.

and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

I don't think you can schedule and background windows backup?

I haven't looked at it very much, however - it sends and gets my files to DLT just fine,  but I use it manually.. :-)

hmmm... you should be able to. i'm at least fairly certain it has a scheduler in there, given its just a rebadged version of backupexec. mind you, how "cut down" have microsoft made it?

if needed, i'm sure i have an old version of Legato Netbackup for WinNT kicking about somewhere.

Thank you all, I found an easier solution, it's called Backup Magic, downloaded from Download.com, it makes everything I needed it to do.
