Personal Paint for OS4 and MorphOS
« on: July 04, 2010, 11:06:27 PM »
What ever became of it? I read about it in an old issue of Total Amiga, but all I can find are old 680x0 versions that lock my system up when I use them in MorphOS.

For what do you want it ? It only supports 8bit and it's very outdated for image processing. Better use IFX instead.

Well the 68k Version runs great on AmigaOS4. I don´t know about IFX, but PPaint is a painting programm. It is not for image processing or photo touch up. And painting doesn´t strictly require 32Bits of color depth - ask Michelangelo.

I have been a Deluxe Paint user for many years and found it hard to adapt my workflow to other software. Can MorphOS run Deluxe Paint without UAE? Unfortunately OS4 doesn´t :,-(

PPaint (68k version) works on MorphOS, but there might be some setting which causes problems. Check PPaint/PPaint_Prefs/Startup_1.set file and if you have line
BLITLIBS = "personal_agnus_blit.library", "personal_68000_blit.library", 1
edit it with text editor and replace the 1 with 0.

@Jose
If you need 8 bit editing, then it just rules and is better than IFX for that :). For example if you need gif animations to web pages or if you're coding something for classic Amiga etc. PPaint just has almost tooo easy palette merging and editing functions. It's also good for every pixel perfect editing like icon/gadget/texture/everything editing if you don't need them in full color.
Daily MorphOS user and Amiga active.

Thankx, I'll tinker with the config file tonight.

And yes, 8-bit is what I need...

...DOOM editing. :)

@XDelusion

In addition to what PVc has said you should disable both 15khz amiga video and amiga blitter options too. Choose and save an Amiga screenmode too.

DPaintV runs on MorphOS. But have some issues.
It starts without complaints and paints very smoth, even on a 1024x768x8 screenmode.
Only thing I notice is that the buttons on some requestors are black. eg. the load and save requestor. OK and Cancel and the other buttons are black, so you cant see the text in them, but if you use the mouse and press them, the text will be visible. And then just remove the mouse if you know you pressed the wrong button.
It seem to save and load iff files ok. It loads HAM pictures also.
But the most annoying issue is that it close the workbench when it starts, so after using it you must reboot again.

That's an option in the rightmost menu.
The most annoying issue is that once you try to do animation, the entire thing locks up. :)

I got PPaint working, and it does not even leave screen garbage after you close it (unlike a lot of classic apps on MorphOS). Very good, thank you!

Considering Cloanto are still involved in the Amiga scene, I wonder why they've never decided to recompile PPaint for OS4 and/or MorphOS.  Anyone know?

I would seriously get an NG machine again if they would port PPaint to MOS.

I guess there is some configuration to make it stable, but I could never get PPaint to be stable in 4.1.
