OS 3.5 % 3.9
« on: November 25, 2003, 09:57:52 PM »
Hi Guys,

Im preparing for a little upgrade on the wait for os4. Currently I still have a 3.0 rom sitting in both my A1200's so first thing is to upgrade those.

But then its the operating system:
So far im looking at ....
os 3.9
os 3.5 (its cheap)
Directory Opus Magellan II + Magnum Opus
scalOS
(morphOS on a classic amiga?)

what OS do u guys use? rather than a list of people favs games and apps, what are you actually using day and day out?

cheers guys... might be a long way till os4 or might be round the corner...

It may be cheap, but 3.9 is at most $40-$45 US, and includes lots of bugfixes and extras.  3.9 was not as compelling when it was released, but with the BoingBag 1+2 updates, I wouldn't settle for less today.

> os 3.9

I'm using 3.9 with BoingBag 1+2.

> Directory Opus Magellan II + Magnum Opus

I never got on the Direcory Opus 5/Magellan bandwagon, preferring to stick with Opus 4, which is open source and updated regularly.  As you've apparently also managed to get by without it, I'd suggest holding off for now, since the new OS should keep you busy for a while.  I will consider buying Opus for OS4/PPC when it becomes available.

> scalOS

I tried it a number of years ago, and it always seemed buggy and unsatisfying.  Maybe it's improved, but don't get your hopes up.

> (morphOS on a classic amiga?)

Uh-uh.

Hope that helps,

Todd

MorphOS is said to work fine on classic amigas (of course a PPC card is needed) but that version is not public so its not something to even consider before it is.

Yes. Yes. Not AGA games. About the same as OS3.9.

I have OS3.9 installed, with DOpus Magellan II ontop of that, and it provides a nice environment to work in.
3.9 is okay on its own, but it gets a lot more productive with DOpus in the mix ;)
After a decade away from the scene, I am back!

I still have MorphOS for Classic Amiga on my Amiga HD. I just don't
have Amiga anymore :-D

It was really cute system. You could choose to use Ambient or
Workbench (both equally bad ;) ) but tools like KingCON are built-in.
I had MUI 3.9 PPC on it so it was very fast. Still nothing compared to
"real" PPC machine. But it was neat I could use some neat MUI features
in my apps not available for ordinary Amiga users :-D

Regarding app compatibility there werent much difference. For games
only system friendly software runs. No chance to play SuperCars II
from MorphOS for example (unless you use UAE).

But until MorphOS is publicly available for classic Amigas it is
vapour IMO.
My Amigas: A500, Mac Mini and PowerBook

OS3.9 + DopusMag II - used to experiment with ScalOS, but it's bugged, and works little weird for me ..
Thanks God, I met DoMag - without it I couldn't live..
The Power RangerZ uses Amiga, and You??

I personally couldn't live without DOpus5.82 (in WB replacement mode).  Very highly recommended.
Adds power and configurability like never before.

I personally found DOpus to be a far more significant upgrade, than the shift from 3.1 to 3.5 was.

I looked into uprgrading to 3.9 (from 3.5) and decided it wasn't worth it, for me anyway.

Many of the new features it provides can be got through various stuff on Aminet anyway  (Some like XAD and MooVid need to registered though).

However IIRC 3.9 contains much better options for Web browser and TCP stack than did 3.5 (it's TCP was a time limited demo!).  So if you don't already have IBrowse and Miami or something similar then 3.9 would definitely be a better option than 3.5.
Amiga 1230/50 + 34MB  (OS3.5 + DOpus 5.82)

has anyone tried running UAE on MorphOS on a classic Amiga?

Does it use the PPC to emulate the 68k?
for example a 603e 220mhz with 68040, using UAE on MorphOS would it emulate a 68040 or run at 68060?

@xyth
cheers mate for that info
