So what do you use your computer for?
« on: June 18, 2010, 08:18:46 PM »
The thread about who is using classic amigas still got me thinking about what I actually use my computers for.

So.. what do you currently do on your computer ?

Which of these things are essential and which are bonus ? (i,e, you could go without them if need be)

I use my A1200 with Blizzard '030 for assembly language programming and sometimes games (recently registered WHDLoad :)). I also play music on it in WAV format for the novelty factor. It's a pity AmigaOs 3.0 is so far behind the times and I sometimes think of writing something much better (and don't say AmigaOs 3.9, because that's just as far behind the times ).

A new OS and things like good web browsers which don't need GFX cards and ten million tera herz CPUs to be fast, would surely be welcome (I'd do it all if it wasn't so much damned work )

Old machines like classic Amigas with 68K+AGA could do a lot more with up to date, well written OS and other software (yes, that means ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE, deal with it ;)). Pity no one seems to want to do it :(

Largely as a gateway to chat about things on these forums, and otherwise largely to learn and work on hardware projects. I'm interested in FPGAs, Verilog, driver programming, updating uboot, playing with PCI and PCI-Express busses, learning and then doing PCB design and layout, and computer system design.

I haven't done much else for some time. I haven't had an Amiga plugged in for a while, the wife really wants us to get around to sorting through our combined clutter room, and get an office of sorts set up and I'll be able to use Amigas again then. I haven't played a game in ages. I own all the Hyperion games, Wipeout, etc. but have never really played them. Still never even seen Shogo in any context beyond the cardboard box. I really hope to change that someday.

My Powerbook for light gaming, web and music

My A3000, nothing atm, its in NY getting fixed. When I get it back, probably for fun, coding and light web browsing
My machines:
PowerMac G4 MDD 1.5ghz 1.25GB 10.5.8 & MOS 2.7
Mac Mini C2D 10.6.8 2GHz 3GB 250GB HDD

Need a part for a PC or Mac? PM me, I\'ll let you know if I come across it.

OS X trumps Windows on every level.

MorphOS, OS4 and Classic Amiga systems are the only ones who are real \'Amigas\', not that joke AROS or Amiga Forever.

Well, the pc is primarily a 'media gateway'. It's a web browser for collecting and managing old radio programs, music, graphics or whatever. A source of news and communications for places like this and other interests. It's also a warehouse for personal data... like scanned bills & such or logs that the doc wants me to keep. So it's more of an appliance than a hobby like it was back the prime of the Amiga & before.

I'd like to do learn some FPGA coding sometime... and do a little bit of VB stuff. But VB is a lot more convoluted than I'd like... and I'd prefer not to go to the bare metal like C. ;-)

I use most of my computers to tinker with software toys. I use my PC to play Fallout 3 and work from home, although not usually at the same time. I don't really do anything useful or creative with them these days, but I'm most productive during the late summer and fall months, so we'll see.

I assume you are talking about Commodore Amiga's? I have an A1200 rig which I mainly use to access some old stuff I have on various old media. That's pretty much it, I'm afraid. MorphOS took over a long time ago for me. And when it comes to MorphOS, I have several capable systems. 1x Pegasos1 April2, 1x Pegasos2 G3, 1x Pegasos2 G4, 1 Efika, 1 Mac Mini G4 1.5GHz/64MB VRAM, of which only the Peg2 G4 has a registered MorphOS key file, but the Mac Mini will follow within days. All that is purely for hobby, however.

Other than that I recently put together a new PC based on an Intel Core i7 (quad core) and Windows 7. That's the system I use professionally. Can't live without the applications and performance.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

I use a MacBook for web browsing, photo management, some games, (learning and doing) web coding, playing with different operating systems (Virtual Box is great), web publishing and shopping!

Amigas packed up due to lack of space. :(

Oh man, that is a good game! I don't know how much time I have spent playing that (and the addons). "I've seen it all!" On PS3 though. ;)

I'm a sucker for the Bethesda engine used in Fallout 3 and Oblivion IV (which I obviously also played a lot). I know many people have negative opinions about it, but I like it a lot. :)

Internet
Torrents
watch movies/listen to music (it's an A/V hub for projector + 12ft screen)
emulators
email
web page design
pixel art
photo archive/manipulation
print stuff
burn coaste....I mean discs
Once a decade transcode AVI to VOBs

I think that's it really. The only thing I don't do is play games (ie modern PC games) as I have just about any console you can think of and a stack of games for it from 1978 onwards :)

@takemehomegrandma

I'm really looking forwared to Fallout New Vegas, even if the graphics won't change substantially.

Bethesda's engines aren't always optimal, but when they're first released, they usually do novel things that eventually become standard. Can't wait to see what they come up with for the next Elder Scrolls game, assuming they're working on one.
