What is a decent word processor with a reasonable graphical interface, that will run on 3.1 with very limited ram (2 megabyte +)

You might want to look into some of the earlier versions of a program called Final Writer. Also, Wordworth might also work with 2MB.

I have a copy of Final Writer 97 but it wont run. I guess I'll wait with that until I get my accelerator card in the mail, and look for an older version until then.

Any preferences between Final Writer and Wordworth ?

FinalWriter is my favourite, which I still use. AmigaWriter gets occasional use sometimes. And for more complex layouts Pagestream. Never got into WordWorth myself.
Daily MorphOS user and Amiga active.

I used to use Final Writer back at university. Wasn't there something like a Final Office Suite or something? Final Calc (TurboCalc) and Final Data were also included.

Word processing used to be a lot more about words and less about fonts and layout. Protext, Scribble!, etc, were very popular.

The earlier version is called Final Copy (and Final Copy II). It's good.

Yep, nice program, and produces good prints when needed.

Pagestream is a desktop publishing program, don't use it when you're only interested in word processing, it's like using Quark Express for writing a letter

I think I had Final Writer 97 working on my 2MB A600 (can't remember if I had my PCMCIA RAM plugged in).

I had Excellence 2.0 running perfectly on basic A500 Plus with 1MB, that served me well from 1991 until 1999.

Well, I got through a graduate degree using WordPerfect on an A1000 before 2 MB of RAM were even available for it; you can't get much more classic than that! As far as capability, I still think WordPerfect can do more than 99.99% of users will ever need in a lifetime.

Edit: I suppose I should point out that I hardly ever to never use a 'word processor' to enter text. I use a 'text editor', usually the great ne (nice editor), then import it into a wp to tweak it. Perhaps that's why I strangely still like WordPerfect.

I just found a newspaper article on WordPerfect Amiga:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1309&dat=19871217&id=W7sTAAAAIBAJ&sjid=gJADAAAAIBAJ&pg=3821,4561977

" WordPerfect Amiga incorporates many of Amiga's features which are unavailable with the conventional IBM-compatible system."

Final Writer 97 is the best. I also use Excellence 3.0 on a 2.5Mb A1000 - not bad, but the output is not quite as good as Final Writer.
I don't like Wordworth at all.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I used Wordperfect on a 5mb A2000/030 to do my university dissertation on due to my 'partner' using WP on a PC... but I prefered Wordsworth 2.0 at the time.

Would be interesting to discuss also about any possible compatibility with Microsoft *.doc.

I think RTF (rich text format) is as close as you can get.

Wordworth 6 and 7 had RTF compatibility, as did FinalWriter97.

As to the OPs question regarding what would run on an unexpanded 1200... I (briefly) ran Wordworth 4.1 that way, but I have to say it was a deeply unpleasant experience and offered no real way of exporting files to other word processors beyond .txt.

I have to say that I prefered Wordworth, but then my needs didn't really extend to the things offered by FinalWriter.
