Amiga 1200 SSD HD
« on: June 16, 2010, 03:15:24 AM »
Right now I'm running my A1200 with a 4GB CF card with adapter.

ClassicWB ADV/3.1.

Thanks to the Subway USB controller and the wireless card, the 4GB is full of MODS, whdload games and other apps. Oh, Also my 400mb shapeshifter mac partition.  And I have more to load - I'm not done.

Anyway, I was considering redoing the entire thing with a larger CF card, but then I thought about a PATA SSD HD as it won't wear out. I ordered a KingSpec 2.5" 32 GB PATA SSD..

"8years @100GBytes write and erase per day at 32GB"

So, my question, what is the best way to format this as far as OS, partitions, filesystems, etc? I do have a legit copy of 3.9(and 3.5), but right now I just run 3.1 because I just have an 030/40.

thanks,

-nate

SSDs use the same flash memory as CF cards and USB memory sticks, so I don't think they wear out less fast than CF cards.

Check other threads in this forum about using disks larger than 4GB. It's dangerous if you don't know what you are doing.

Actually, the HDD quality NAND flash, have been rated up to around 1 million writes.

Off the top of my head, Sandisk rates their CF NAND at around 10,000 writes. (Per sector).

And as for the using larger than 4GB, *ALWAYS* make the boot drive, in the FIRST 2GB.  That way you can safely load all your system patches and other guff safely, then after that, once you have patched TD64 or NSD, you can use LARGE partitions.., but always remember, the larger the partition, if it needs revalidating, the longer it takes.

Thats why we usually recommend making the BOOT partition <1GIG, heck, even a couple of hundred megs will do nicely as a boot.

Hi:
It seems it costs more than the 32Gb Transcend CF I bought at GoiBuy for 62€, and will do the same.

The easiest way to install it is within WinUAE using Smart File System.

You can find the best tutorial here: http://wiki.classicamiga.com/How_to_install_SFS_onto_a_real_Harddrive_within_WinUAE

The only problem I found with big CF in my case was with the internal CD Rom: the system crashed after installing Idefix, but it was solved using the Idefix patch you can find at Aminet.

Remember to make an small bootable partition. I believe 500Mb is a good measure. Some people say 400MB, others 1Gb.
A1200, Lateral 32GB CF, internal Dvd, ACA 1230/56 with an MKII Fast ATA at 9,5Mb/s, another A1200 BPPC project in progress (more or less), and posting from my own/better C64x in my Tv using Hdmi.

It would be an interesting experiment for someone to try and 'burn-out' a CF card on the Amiga.

ie: Create a simple script that copies files to and from a CF card an infinite number of times...

I suspect the Amiga would wear out before the CF card! :-)

Mike.

SFS is not able to access more than 4GB if the IDE driver is not able to do so. The tutorial only discusses how to install SFS, it does not say anything about >4GB support. It's safe to use more than 4GB with SFS on UAE's uaehf.device,  because it supports that. It does not work on the Amiga's internal IDE controller with the builtin driver.

The Wiki Amiga tutorial I've put is good to install SMS, but they have another tutorial about big partitions:
http://wiki.classicamiga.com/Installing_a_large_Harddrive_(4GB_or_larger)
Sorry, I don't know what happens with the link, really there is text in the page. Try google search "Installing a large Harddrive (4GB or larger)"

And remember you don't have to use the "-disableharddrivesafetycheck". If you use Windows XP no problem, and if you have Windows Vista only have to create a WinUAE shortcut on the desktop, right click on it and select "execute as administrator", to use your own HD.

I have SMS in my 32gb CF and goes right.

EDIT: (Well, disableharddrivesafetycheck is used in old WinUAE versions, but not in the latest)

Write endurance   80years@10GBytes write and erase per day at 32GB <-- that is way better than CF..

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=194

I ordered this IDE adapter for Amigakit. I'm going to try the included IDEFix software to see if I can gain access to all 32GB.

Also I have acquired a IDE->SATA adapter and SATA external header. That will allow me to connect any cheap external CD-ROM or HD to my A1200.

I suppose I better figure out what I'm doing... I'm sure I will after corrupting the SSD several times.

I think I will use my CF the 30 years it supports, and I believe for then (year 2040) I could change it for a 10 Terabytes HD in the same room, but if you prefer waiting 80 years, that's ok....

Just throw a windows swap file at the CF card, that will do the trick.
