Want to buy an Amiga, which Model should I buy ?
« on: June 11, 2010, 08:07:43 PM »
Hi,

I never had an amiga. I started "computing" with an schneider-euro-pc (8088).
Recently I played amigagames with an emulator (E-UAE on the mac). I know about the minimig- and the fpga-arcade Projekt, but I want to have a real amiga!

If i am only interested in gaming and most game-compatiblity, which amiga should i buy ?

if i can't get it on any lCD/TFT Monitor because of the 15khz/50hz i plan to buy an monitor-adapter from the amiga to scart in order to use it on an rgb-scart lcd tv. (19" or 22")

So what amiga is best for me (500/500plus/600/1200) ?
it must be a tastatur-only model, so no tower or desktop.

Thx fo the advice.
Greetings from Germany!

1200 is the only way to go if you want the most game compatibility including AGA games.  Best bet is to get one with enough RAM to run WHDload, which will make running many older games easier.
3 Commodore file cabinets, 2 Commodore USB turntables, 1 AmigaWorld beer mug
Alienware M14x i7 laptop running AmigaForever

For gaming, go with a 1200.

The 1200 will run AGA games, and the couple of games that don't play nice with kickstart 3.1 will run fine with relokick or a similar app.

1200 also has a PCMCIA card slot, which makes transferring software very easy.

A1200 means kickstart > 1.3 (2.x or 3.x)
i heared that many games must have 1.3 in order to work correctly.

Many, no. There are some, but you can load the older kickstart from a disk (relokick is an easy app to do this) and play them just fine.

I don't think I've ever run across a game that I couldn't get to run on a 1200.

Of course, you can also set it up with an actual rom switcher so you don't even have to worry about that :)

there's all sorts of options.

I've used this
http://www.ambery.com/rgbcgatovgac.html
on mine. Its kinda pricey at a 100 bucks US, and you'll need an adapter for the amiga monitor port, but it works great on my LCD

what lcd are you using ?
are there any negative effects on the picture quality like tearing, no smooth scrolling, ghost-effects, or anything else ?

Thx again

the LCD I am using is a dirt cheap Acer monitor I got from a local store here.

Picture quality is decent. Its not quite as perfect as an old Commodore 1084 monitor but it does a good job, though I had to mess with the settings quite a bit.

In workbench, there is a slight amount of ghosting but its not bad at all.

If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll see if i can take a picture or two to show

Well I never ever got Lotus II or Lotus III to work on my 1st generation 93 Commodore KS 3.0 A1200 and as that's the only decent driving game on Amiga then you're screwed with an A1200 if you like driving games ;)

Talking seriously, best bet for using the ADF archive of games you've enjoyed on UAE is via an Amiga with PCMCIA like the A600 or A1200 and purchase a transfer kit. Or as others have said load up a WHDload archive via A1200+4mb+HD...not all games are in WHDload archive though.

If you are on an extreme budget, get an A500 off ebay for 10 euros, it will probably come with 200-300 'blank' disks full of copied games so you have an instant library of games and no hassle setting anything up...just load and go.....the yellowing is free :)

is that external 15khz scaler you mentioned the same thing as this integreated one
http://amiga.resource.cx/exp/indivisionaga
i can get it here in germany if it is as usefull as the external one.
but if the external thing works with atatri ste too, so it would be the better thing because i also plan to get one and a c64 too of course.
a have some DD-disk here. but i think i will use an hd or sd-card. only the absolute special-games where loaded from 3,5" Disk. ;-)
