X1000 upcoming demo: glassbox or hands on?
« on: June 10, 2010, 06:09:09 PM »
So how do you think the upcoming X1000 demo will go down? Board secured in a glass box running a demo-on-rails, or a more open hands-on demo where users can take it for a spin?

I remember OS4.0 being demoed at AmiWest 2003 by Ben Hermans. It was run on an Amiga 4000 with CyberstormPPC. He loaded it, opened and moved a few windows. That was the extent of the demo iirc.

I wouldn't even want to guess at this point.

I'd have several running demos non-stop "under glass", and have one (turned off) at the booth to pass around for hands on, and then the main one running to a projector with KiKi in the FG showing her mastery of how it works for the crowds.

Thats the way I'd roll...

I wasn't aware that OS4.0 even ran on a CyberstormPPC in 2003!

Yes, it did though it was not released for CyberstormPPC for many years later. IIRC this demo caused a lot of flame wars between red & blue camps. The tightly controlled demo made many believe it was still mostly 68K code and buggy.

You'll see AmigaOS running on the latest Amiga computer system. We'll all find out how interactive it is soon enough.

I wonder if the news will hit Slashdot. They seem eager to hear all about the latest AmigaOS systems after that Timberwolf news. Looks like many outsiders didn't even know AmigaOS was still going and running on PPC systems these days.

And don't forget to run Ranger on it and find out what CPU is in there... ;)

In 2008 I was one of these outsiders. But if you have a passion for Amiga, any piece of news can ignite curiosity, make you dig deeper and ... well ... you´ll find amiga.org and maybe the amiga roundtable podcast. Next thing you know is you sell your MacBook and get a SAM :insane:

I`d love to play with an X1000, but I am not convinced to make a long travel to some convention just to see somebody running Workbench and MPlayer.

MacBook and Sam are to different purposes.  Buying a SAm is good, but don't think you're going to replace your MacBook with it...

They probably didn't expect to find in 2010 anybody that thinks PPC has any future for desktop either. Wait to see their happy faces when they discover that x1000 will cost nearly 1800Euros including VAT. And when they discover that the hardware is slower than Apple hardware released 5 years ago? their comments will be priceless.

I hope for the best, but I just think its crazy expensive. For that kind of coin it should do something other computer's can't.

I'm not the least bit excited about a computer thats so slow with only one processor core even able to be used.

Morph and Aros much better options in my view, but I still hope that somehow hyperion wises up and gives users better options.

They won't complain because it is blaspheming the holy church of Amiga.
OTOH my brother just spent $1400 on a Sony Atom powered netbook. The lesson is... If you don't have the money to spend on an X1000 don't. You can easily get an Amiga experience out of an upgraded 1200 or just an emulator.

To its credit it can do something cheaper and more powerful machines cant.  Question is, is it worth the entry fee just to run OS4?
