Can't fit GVP-M Typhoon into A1200. Help.
« on: June 07, 2010, 02:43:46 PM »
I'm trying to insert a new GVP-M Typhoon 32MB accelerator card into my A1200 via the bottom expansion door and am having problem fitting it in. I was able to connect it to the expansion port, but it looks like the card is too thick and I'm not able to close the bottom door. The SIMM card module protrudes about 1mm outside of the window. The card is sitting on top of the plastic guards that are inside of the expansion door.

I see that many of you here have the same card. Did you also have problems fitting it in? How did you fix it?

Here's the card for your reference.

Thank you.

I am sure I have seen other users post the same issue.  I did a search but could'nt find anything.
You might have to take the top off and the keyboard for easier access. Thicker cards are hard to slot in.  The benefit though is once they are in they don't move about.

I'm sure someone who has bought one can offer some advice.  Bump....

I have the same card. You need to trim the plastic ledge on the bottom of the trapdoor. Be careful not to cut yourself.

Now is a golden opportunity to build yourself a A1200 tower ;)

Is your SIMM the type that has chips on both sides, or only on one side? Back when I had an A1200 and Blizzard, I could only find a SIMM with chips on both sides, which caused the improper fitting and the cover to not quite fit. Once I found the other type of SIMM, it fit OK.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

The SIMM chip is two sided and interferes with the door. The SIMM socket is also to tall and interferes with the door as well. It's about 1mm too tall.

What do you think about opening the Amiga and installing the GVP card under the plastic hinge instead of removing it?

Do I need to worry about the bottom of the GVP card touching the metal bottom of the expansion bay?

I often leave the plastic cover off anyway. You often had to mod the lip to the cover to get it back on. The makers of these cards really tried to cram as much in. I also often open the Amiga and fit from inside. If your worried about touching the shielding with the card just run a bit of insulating tape across those circuit spots and the shielding. I have done so many mods to the cover including drilling holes in it. It will work you just need to be creative.

if this is the board you have:

http://amiga.resource.cx/photos/taifun2,1

All you need to do is simply trim the trapdoor down. The board will fit nice and snug with the trapdoor on.

I would really worry about extra stress on the expansion connector and the possibly short if you mounted the board differently. You may need a lower profile SIMM.

Mine evan has the SCSI...

Yes that's the card I have. When I insert the card in, the SIMM Holder/Slot and the SIMM card itself protrudes about 1-2mm above the area where the bay door would be. Trimming the door would probably not help, I would literally have to make a hole in the door as the GVP card protrudes higher than where the door would sit. I emailed the place where I bought it (SoftHut) and they're going to check with the manufacturer. They were surprised as well.

Easy answer....ditch the door!

You don't need it and it improves air-flow without it anyway.   To stop the card 'sagging', just use a bit of hot glue to hold your card in place :)

Here's a pic fo ya.

Nice, I wish mine could fit like yours. I think the riser for the SIMM card is unnecessarily too tall. Maybe yours is slightly shorter. 1 or 2mm makes a difference.

Do you think it would be ok/possible to sit the card above that white plastic hinge (where you have the glue) instead of at the bottom? I think that should work as that would only make about 2mm difference which should not flex the card too much.

No don't do that it because it would put pressure on the card (never a good thing), just mount it the same way I did it and all will be well with the world.
