This monkey's gone to heaven
« on: June 05, 2010, 09:43:19 PM »
I know this is not strictly Amiga but, I was going to get a C64 to midi with my Amiga. Sad news is my ebay win was a big looser. It has booted maybe twice, with some garbage screen and maybe twice with a normal looking blue start screen. No cursor blinking.

Well, question is, could it be fixed? Who can? Should not bother and just keep it for parts and find another one? If so, I hope to salvage the SID off this one...

Start by testing power supply voltages. Do you have a multimeter? Are you comfortable with one?
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

Ok, I'll check it... I guess that's a good idea, considering this thing is from 1983!

Garbage screen?  Check the 2364 ROMs.  And, yes, it's fixable.

If you can't find any replacements, consider making your own 2764-to-2364 adapters (see here)

I went through the exact same thing (and symptoms) while reviving an old C64 a few months ago.

Ok, I am following this:

http://www.hardwarebook.info/C64_Power_Supply

And only can get +5VDC to come up. Nothing else...

9VAC is also required - it's used to generate additional 5VDC internally.
I've had many - all? - PSUs go bad on 5V (the PSU's 7805 regulator is poorly cooled) but never on 9VAC. You might need to hook up another PSU to try with.

Right. I'm thinking it was sort of working, going bad. And then a going, going, gone decline happened to the PSU. I have some hope for the MB...

Try to put my hands on a known working PSU now.

Thanks guys.

Hi friend:
I had some problems with a C64 too, which I got working. The best places I can give you to fix one are:
http://www.commodore.ca/manuals/Tips/c64_tips.htm to know which chip can give the problem,
http://www.faime.demon.co.uk/retro/cbm.html Repair info,
http://personalpages.tds.net/~rcarlsen/cbm.html Ray Carlsens repair info,
http://www.arcadecomponents.com/repairlogs.html Repair Logs,
http://www.arcadecomponents.com/catalog/item/3054735/2582508.htm, the cheapest for components.

I think they will be of some help.

Thank goodness this is about a computer and not that disturbing tortured monkey picture again...

Ive sent both a C64 and a C128 to Ray Carlsen for repairs and his work is top notch and his prices are fair. Id recommend him if you cant fix it yourself.

@Thegoose,

I've got several power supplies sitting here that I'm pretty sure are for a C64. I'll bring them to you when I give your A3000 back......BTW answer my damn email I sent you yesterday! ;)
