SCSI CD-ROM in A4000T - How to configure
« on: June 04, 2010, 11:55:18 PM »
I'm a newbie with an A4000T and am trying to configure a SCSI CD-ROM drive. I just installed Workbench 3.1 on the internal SCSI hard drive successfully. HDTools sees the SCSI CD-ROM drive, but doesn't recognize it as a valid drive type, so I'm assuming that I need the proper drivers installed, configured, etc. Tried to do some due diligence and search for the solution before posting an uber-newbie question like this, but I think I'm just getting more confused. Any help is appreciated.

Copy the CD0 file from Storage to Devs:DosDrivers

Make sure the unit of your CD-ROM drive matched the unit in the icon.

Make sure L:CDFilesystem is present.

That's it!!

Good luck!

This is a good start, but, rcgrabbag, you'll probably find the OS3.1 built-in CD Filesystem to be woefully inadequate and buggy. AsimCDFS (commercial), AmiCDFS (Aminet), CacheCDFS (Aminet), and BabelCDFS (babel.de) are common replacements.

OK thanks! Got the CD0 file in Devs -> DosDrivers, used Information to change the Unit# in CD0 to match the SCSI device ID. I'm a little unclear on checking for the presence of L:CDFilesystem. Where does/should that reside?

It could be in Storage: cant remember to be honest.  It might already be in the L: folder.
Matt_H is right, apparently the built-in CBM solution is buggy, but it's a good start anyway.

I'll say, having trouble remembering a previous poster in the same thread!

For ease of use, I go with IDEFIX99 on aminet.  Finds your drive and configures it.

It does.  I only ever used it until I got 3.9 installed, at which point I installed its CD driver.

Yep, found CDFileSystem in folder L. So, dropped a CD in the drive and lo and behold, it worked!! Thanks Tension! And thanks for the alternate file system suggestions Matt_H, I'll check them out.

L: is a logical directory (an 'Assign' in Amiga parlance) equivalent to SYS:L (and SYS: is a logical directory equivalent to your boot partition). So if you open a shell and type 'dir L:' (without the quotes) you should see CDFilesystem and a few other files.

You can also open your boot partition in Workbench and select Window->Show->All Files. L should then appear in that window and you can look inside. System files and directories are hidden by default - they don't have icons. Icons are those .info files you'll see in most dir listings in the shell and file requesters.

EDIT: Whoops, you all beat me to it while I was typing. :) Hope the UI tips come in handy, rcgrabbag.

Thanks Folks! Yeah, navigating these older systems is coming back to me now. Although I don't have any measurable experience with an Amiga, I was able to find the L directory and verify that CDFilesystem was there. I'm in the process of building this A4000T from scratch and learning as I go. My aim here is to build a complete Toaster/Flyer 4000 system in vintage fashion. I'm into old R/C cars (collecting/running/restoring) and the goal here is to shoot some video of these old toys running around, and edit the video on a vintage toaster/flyer system for the full vintage effect! If you're curious, my site is rcgrabbag.com, and you can see some real old commercials/videos that the manufacturers made years ago to promote these items (direct link).
