CF hard drive. Anything to be aware of?
« on: June 03, 2010, 08:26:11 AM »
So ordered a compact flash card and adapter from amigakit. Anything in particular to be aware of when setting this up ?

I will be getting an accelerator card later on. I've heard some people say that you are best off formatting and setting up your hard drive with all expansions connected properly or you may get system crashes.

Anything to that or hogwash ?

Well I'm not saying people haven't had problems but I hook my CF card to my PC and use WinUAE to prep, partition and install 3.9. When that's on I transfer it to my real Amiga and install other drivers (CybergraphX etc) as required. Have done that method on 600s, 1200s and 4000s (all accelerated, some with PPC) and have never had any trouble at all.

The only gotcha I experienced was to watch what the MaxTransfer rate is set to when you prep the drive. This thread describes what you should set it to and why - http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=48013 You'll realise quite quickly if you get it wrong as you'll see checksum errors galore.

Set maxtransfer to 0x1fe00. There's no need to know the details behind this, just take it as yet another dogma to swallow. :-)

Oh yeah, and it's not a rate, it's a size.

I bought the CF amigakit one a week or two ago, and it works fine. Although when using Amigakits Workbench installer I had checksum errors and once you try 'retry' a couple of times and it doesn't work, I hit 'cancel' and their installer never came back up, so I installed Workbench using WB Installer and it is fine now

You dont want it to parse 0x1FE00000, so i would try to make it specify 0x0001FE00 for Maxtransfer.

The only thing I am aware of, is if the specific hardware needs libraries to operate, like 040 or 060 boards, you need them installed or your workbench will crash while loading..., like my A4000, which requires the 68060.library files installed because it has a Cyberstorm 060 MK-II
