What makes a real Amiga ?
« on: June 01, 2010, 09:53:01 PM »
Looking at the web page legal emulation, the requirements are for a real Amiga:

http://guide.abime.net/links.htm

Requirements
You will need the following to follow this tutorial:
 • A real Amiga computer (A500+/A600/A1200)
 •
 • Workbench 2.0+
 •
 • CrossDOS
 •
 • TransROM (comes with WinUAE)
 •
 • Once you have all of the above proceed to the guide.
My question is what makes a real Amiga, is my A2000 not real, is there a difference in these computers?

In this case, the person is simply referring to an actual Amiga with a Kickstart ROM chip on the motherboard for the purpose of transferring to a floppy disk for use with UAE

They are just examples of some Amiga models.

The link you provided contains neither a "legal emulation" page nor a description of a real Amiga.

A real Amiga in the context of classic Amiga systems would likely be the 500/600, 2000, 3000 and 4000 series plus the 1200. You could very well include an upgraded CDTV/CD32 or Amiga 1000 in there as well.

You could always ask more specific questions to the folks over at eab but just don't ask the Green Alien as he passed on some time ago...

We're all pretty much legal emulator owners since we all have living. comatose and dead machines lieing around the house...

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

I don't know about the legal aspects, but ask yourself this

"Is your computer like a friend?"
do you spend time with it?
does it bring happiness and memories to you?
And ever once in a while does it just Piss You Off totally!??

I think it is written to protect them from being sued. Amiga the company is awol, until they're sure they're dead they need to keep the disclaimer.

Exept for Amithalon, If it runs the OS Natively from its own hardware, its a real Amiga

I don't understand this comment.

I don't count a keyboard, mouse and floppy drive an 'upgrade' for CD32, this configuration will run A1200 games I would guess. Also 256kb chipram cartridges were practically given away with A1000s to get them more or less up to 512kb internally.

Also on a side note.....why do you need to transfer your own specific ROM manually? If you own the machine and somebody else has already done the tricky bit, why force yourself to go through it again when the result will be an identical ROM file for UAE?

I presume you mean no clone Amigas?

1. Commodore didn't licence the chipset.
2. Reverse engineering Agnus/Denise/Paula was not cost effective.

Only simple machines have pirated clones usually, like the Hong Kong Apple II machines costing 2/3 to 1/2 the price of the real thing.

PC being cloned never helped IBM's fortunes, Microsoft were the only winners in that situation with DOS/Windows.

Some would say if it aint got a circa 1980-90's Commodore logo on it, it aint a "real" Amiga.

Your A2000 has a C= logo so your all set.

I was more or less trying to say that there were several Amiga systems that ran similar things, and others (A1000, CDTV and CD32) that could if prodded but certainly not as easily as the others. For instance how many A1000's ever had graphics cards, ethernet cards, etc. Same for the CDTV and CD32.

As for the legality, people are just covering themselves... They can't very well say "Just go get the ROMS off of any bit torrent site" but that is what I did even though I own an A1200. I certainly didn't copy my rom from 1200. I have no moral problem with it, I support developers like Individual computers and vendors like Amigakit and the dude that made WHDload which I registered. If there were more goodies to buy I certainly would.

Draco System made a clone. They didn't have the AGA/ECS-chipset, but atleast the Kickstart iirc. And then we have the Access amiga clone (an Amiga 1200 in a 5 1/4 form factor). Perhaps a Escom license though. Perhaps not true clones... but still.

edit: Macrosystem didn't have a license I see now. It's an interesting clone computer still.

that guide is just showing you how to copy the kickstart rom from any physical amiga to use in an emulator. the concept is similar (though easier) if you simply own an kickstart chip. or broken amiga or just a motherboard.

I would recommend Amiga Forever by cloanto software. Even if you have a real amiga, Amiga Forever has all the roms from 1.0 to 3.1, as well as os discs, games, apps and demos.
Oh yeah?!?
Well your stupid bit is set,
and its read only!
