WHDLoad problems with some games
« on: November 24, 2003, 08:00:12 AM »
I am having some problems on my 4000.  I have WHDLoad (Reg) and noticed that a lot of games are not working unless I disable PRELOAD.  On my 3000 it works ok.  I recall it working fine before, but preload is not working!  Any ideas?

Have you tried the normal compatibility tooltypes (NOAUTOVEC, NOCACHE, etc)? Correct screenmode (NTSC/PAL)?

Check your S: assign for the global config. Maybe something's not set properly in there.

I find it that the usual problems with games not working is if you
either have or don't have the following tooltypes set (you need to
experiment):

PAL
NOCACHE
NOVBRMOVE
NOAUTOVEC

NOCACHE is usually required on my accelerated A1200 and A4000 systems,
and NOVBRMOVE and NOAUTOVEC sometimes may be necessary too. Rarely do
I need to activate all 3 at once, however some titles require it. It
really depends of your system, hardware installed, etc., so there's no
such a thing as a default config that is guaranteed to work for anyone
with any specs. It's always a trial and error ordeal which usually
turns out to work OK on any accelerated setup, when you learnd the
right tooltype combination.

PRELOAD has always been a must, as it preloads the game to fast ram
and without it the game loading is butt slow. Never gave me any
problems. Only the the above mentioned tooltypes.

@lionstorm

You won't be able to avoid the slowdown in SWOS. I tried it myself and according to the author of the WHDLoad installer it's a software problem, and not coursed by the WHDLoad program. You can read it yourself in the readme file of the SWOS installer.

Try inserting NOVBRMOVE as one of the tooltypes, it helps a bit on my setup.

Well I have a 4000 with a GVP 4060 and 3000 with a CSMKII 060.  The same tooltypes are used and it works on the 3000 and not on my 4000.  And I recall that it DID work before.  I also rebooted into Early Startup and did a Setpatch and LoadWB and ran the game and it worked!  So there has to be something weird with my OS3.9 install.  I disabled all extras like MCP, Visual Prefs and WBStartup and still no go.  I will attempt to reinstall OS3.9 and see if that works.  I hate it when AmigaOS does that! Its kind of like Windows sometimes!  BUT at least you can boot up and get it working!  No Blue screens here!! ;)

I've noticed some changes with the newer WHDLoad versions. The last time I fired up Pinball Fantasies, it had a choppy framerate. It used to be smooth before.

I tried to install the SlamTilt. I'm using the v16.0 WHDLoad usr bin, the patch and the Back2Roots ADFs.
The game freezes after the intro, on the "Loading" screen. I've tried the various tooltypes combinations, but still nothing.

I've also done a simple HD install (no WHDLoad), and the Game.exe freezes the mouse & KB on the WB screen but no game. If I run the Rebootstart (using a RAD), the game starts with no problems.

Is it a 3.9 WB problem :-? ?!

Well I figured out the problem:  AmigaOS ROM Update V44.57 (BB2).  I guess WHDLoad does not like this ROM update on a 4000, as on my 3000 it works fine.  I reverted to BB1 ROM Update and the games seem to be working ok now.  I emailed Bert.

Anyone else with a 4000 and BB2 ROM Update that can verify it is indeed 4000's (or 1200's, maybe its IDE?) and some games not working?

Here are some games I was testing:  Elf Mania, Shaq Fu AGA, Blood Money.

Thanks

I had the exact same problem on my 1200 (OS3.5) with Simon the Sorceror.

However when I registered WHDLoad the problem disappeared.

Speaking of WHDLoad, I registered it almost a month ago and have never heard back from anyone. All I know is my money went vwooosh out of my PayPal account without so much as a "thanks for the dough, now piss off".
If I have military spec stuff listed on eBay, you can find it here  :-)
