Best Amiga browser
« on: May 24, 2010, 11:21:08 PM »
Hello all

I've bought the Amiga Kit wireless adapter and after a few hours trying to figure out why my connection was not working (it ended up being the TEXTKEY identifier on my wireless config file - it needed to be simply KEY) now I got AmiTCP and AWEB running fine.

However, AWEB is having a horrible time loading any web page. I get a bunch of Javascript errors (class could not be found) and images are not loading as well.

What else do I need to install here? Is there another browser that is worth trying?

Thanks

Which version of AWEB are you using? AWEB 3 APL is a bit more fault tolerant. The only other 68K browser I can suggest is iBrowse. I've not used the old 68K versions of voyager.

The most "up to date" (in terms of web standards) browser for m68k amigas is probably NetSurf, but I haven't tested it personally. I gather it is presently very slow.

If you want to browse amiga.org on your amiga, might I suggest trying the following link: Amiga.org old browser proxy. This will rework it a bit so the lack of CSS and javascript is less of an issue.

+1 for iBrowse. AWeb's constant refreshes will put you in an epileptic trance within a minute or two.

If your Amiga its a Classic Amiga 68k, without graphics card the best option its Ibrowse 2.4.
If you have a Graphic card  you can try NetSurf 68k.
Other Option is AWEB APL, its no the best,   but now was opened.
Anyway, in "Amiga World", for now are little options, a i not find something decent for browse like a contemporary computer. Ok..remember, any Amiga Classic, its from 18 years ago.. made too much Surfing the web in this days..

IIRC, Javascript is a huge load on 680x0 CPUs.  iBrowse has a way to turn off javascript, which speeds things up.  Don't know if Aweb has this.

Does anyone remember AMosaic 2.0 (pre 3)? This was the last browser I used before I left the platform. Since I am back I have used nothing but OWB (OS4) and (occasionally) iBrowse. But I fired up AMosaic just a minute ago and behold: It runs on OS4 ... well ... it does nothing useful though, because my version is tied to the old AmiTCP.

was I hallucinating when i thought I read that OWB  is available for 68k Amiga's??

I've see it running on an Amiga One but I'd love to see how it looks on running on Amiga Forever!

of course, I Could still be hallucinating!

There's no OWB for m68k is there?

I wonder if FF will be back-portable to m68k.*

I ask more for WinUAE reasons than any notion of running it on real metal.

IBrowse is the best browser to use on classic systems, Netsurf would be the best for UAE. OWB on Aros and MorphOS is great.

Here's OWB running in MorphOS  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwXjodWrRMk

Yes there is, for OWB 1.6 go to http://strohmayer.org/files/OWB_m68k_1.6.lha

Anyway I prefer IBrowse, and NetSurf just for owners of GFX cards and highly upgraded systems.
