Got my NEW A1200 from AmigaKit today
« on: May 24, 2010, 04:08:59 PM »
I unboxed, revelled in that new Amiga smell, connected my 15KHz monitor, popped in the OS3.1, connected my A500 60W Power Supply and the only thing that happens is the A1200 power light comes on and you can hear the FDD unit pull the floppy cover back. I also just get a gray screen on the monitor. I'm really bummed out. I don't want to have to send this all the way back to AmigaKit costing more expense and time. I know the A500 PSU works perfect 'cause I was just using it on the A500. There's an AmigaKit sticker on the back that states warranty is void if removed. Any suggestions?

if you have nothing connected to the internal IDE...
Kick 3.1 needs at least 30secs before anything happens

WHEW! The 'ole "wait 30 seconds trick"!!! Didn't know that! Boots right up!
Thanks a million! I was scared to leave it on longer than about 5-10 seconds!

Another couple of questions plz....   I just bought an Apollo 40MHz accelerator directly from GVP. Can I just plug it in? The accelrator didn't come with any software.

Also, can I now just pop in a HDD, say an 80 Gig, and install OS3.1?

Thanks ddniUK!!!

Not 80 gig.  Os 3.1 does not support drives this big without patches.   I believe you are ok if you dont use more than 4gb partition.

So to start just create 1 4 gig partion for amiga os 3.1 until you can get patches installed.

Just a general comment about buying and returning items which are faulty in the warranty period (from anywhere covered by UK laws), you shouldn't have to pay for the shipping costs for returning them:
Distance Selling regs, A Guide for Businesses on Distance selling:
"If the goods are faulty or do not comply with the contract, you (ie the business) will
have to pay for their return whatever the circumstances."

Well, at least in this case - was just operator error. If he had called or wrote Amigakit, I'm sure they would have gotten to the bottom of it right away.

I think many of us write to a forum first though because we expect/assume a quicker response than we'd get from a dealer. Funny how that works and when you think about it, many dealers reputations precede them. Not simply talking about computer vendors or AmigaKit at all - but just about *ANY* industry lately. It's not uncommon that users have more experience with products than often times the folks that work for a dealer or manufacturer even has. Strange but true.

You will need to have the 68040.library in your LIBS: directory for the 68040.  Which version seems to depend on what accelerator you have, seems to be a bit of a black art to get the perfect match.  Also, you will need RAM for the accelerator or else you wont notice any great speed increase.

I recommend starting off with a clean OS3.9 installation.

I have a few old SIMMs you could have for free if you need one.

OK, this is the board I purchased.....

APOLLO 1230-40 , 68030 Accelerator board for AMIGA 1200
One more barely used ( Test purposes only ) AMIGA 1200 Accelerator board. 01012
Includes the Math CoProcessor, Real Time Clock and Battery, and 32 MB of EDO Memory SIMM. Accelerator us clocked at 40 MHz. (text taken from auction)

Right now with the machine booted up, the memory reports:
1,812,808 graphics mem (I assume 2MB chip ram)
0 other mem (should I be seeing 32MB ram reported here?)

The only reason I asked here first, rather than calling AmigaKit, is that I figured that I was probably doing something wrong. Rarely does new hardware come DOA. Plus, isn't that what forums are for - to get a quick expert opinion/solution? I love forums! However, I always try to figure out the problem myself first before simply blasting something on a forum. I do alot of reading about Amiga but sometimes these machines confound me.

We ship all Amiga 1200s with a document we have written: Getting Started with your new A1200

In this document it states that A1200 startup takes 39 seconds with 3.1 ROMs.

We test all Systems comprehensively and thoroughly before shipping: can you change the forum title to reflect that the item is not DOA.  The title of this thread suggests that we ship faulty goods..

It is best to raise a Support Ticket at our Support site if you have a need for customer service:  http://www.amigakit.com/support

Come on man, do you read every single hardware manual you get? Factor a bit of excitement into the equation, at least :)
