Getting OS 3.9 onto my 1200 without a CD-ROM
« on: May 21, 2010, 04:57:35 AM »
First and foremost, YES, I am aware that since I am using a CF card as my IDE Hard Drive, that I can mount it in WinUAE, install OS 3.9 from there, put it back in my 1200, and away we go.

The reason I do not want to do it this way is because I have noticed that in WB 3.1, games I have installed and work fine on the Emu side, do not run without an error or a crash on the real Amiga. Worms D.C. is one example. WHD games will not play at all on my real 1200.

Yet, if I delete Worms D.C. and re-install it on the real Amiga, it will then play.

So I'm figuring that when certain things install, they detect what hardware you have and install the files required. Though I could be wrong, then again I can think of any other reason why it would matter if a program was installed on a Hard Drive in an emu or on real hardware.

So what do I do? I understand OS 3.9 needs to have the CD rom installed in order to install the Boing Bags and what have you, and if I remember correctly I could not just copy the contents of the CD to a partition and install from there, so what now?

Thankx in advance for any help.

Let me see if I undrerstand you. You dont want to use WinUAE to install 3.9 from it, and then move the cf card to your Amiga.

You can copy the entire contents of the 3.9 cdrom to a drawer in your Amiga, and afterwards, assign that drawer the name AmigaOS3.9 and then install from over there.

BTW, It will also work when you are installing BoingBags.

Anyway, just in case, BoingBags 1 and 2 are password protected and their password is:

Boing Bag 3.9 #1            93ABDF11
Boing Bag 3.9 #2            3FB6986B-B0AD6339-4FF3254B

I hope this helps.

Aghh so the assign command will work for this. O.K. good to know. Shouldn't be a problem then. And I assume I just use the WB 3.1 boot floppy then install after I'm booted up since the 3.9 boot disc will look for a CD-ROM?

No, the 3.9 install looks for the AmigaOS3.9 assign. It doesnt really care if it is on a cdrom or not.

If you have a PCMCIA-CF Adapter for your Amiga. Then you can copy the whole CD onto that and just name it exactly like the OS3.9 CD. Start up the disk that mounts the card and off you go with a fresh installation on your internal harddrive :)

So any one of those cards will do, or does brand matter?

P.S. OS 3.9 installed (again) and running better than when I installed in it UAE.

WHDload is still flaky though, but I'll get onto that in my other thread.

About whdload: I hope you are using the latest version 17.0 which fixes some incompatibilities with accelerators.

Anyway, I am glad 3.9 is now installed and working.

Glad everyone else replied before I did. I installed AOS 3.9 by using SMBFS to mount a windows CD-ROM as a shared device. Completely screws up the file attributes. 3.9 in particular seems to hate that....

The problem is the incompatibility of Windows to support Amiga file attributes.

Yeah, I kinda realized that after all the executables 3.9 upgraded didn't run until a "protect c:whatever +e" command. :D
Finally did a "list sys:#? all lformat "protect *"%p%n*" +e" >ram:s" and "execute ram:s". Made a pot of coffee, came back, and it worked! :D Still had to protect -e a bunch of stuff, just because I was kinda anal-retentive about it. Otherwise, an "executable" jpeg doesn't bother multiview too much. hehe

I've experienced that before, which is also part of the reason why I didn't want to install while within an Emu. Hard Files or not, I don't trust it.

I think you can get away with installing it on an emulator, you just have to map the pc's CD-ROM to a uaescsi.device and pick it up Amiga-side with an Amiga driver. Otherwise, mounting the "D:" (/dev/cdrom0 or E: or whatever) drive will result in the emulator passing the read through and converting the filesystem, minus attributes. Might have the same prob just copying the CD with another OS, too. Making an ISO image from it and mounting it amigaside with an ISO mounter (I think there are some on Aminet, though trying it never occured to me when I did my install for some reason) might work better. I use Nero to make ISO images, though I've never tested how happy the Amiga is with them. There's some freeware ISO imagers for winblows, too. Not sure which are safe and which are malware-infested, though. Ubuntu I think comes with an imager, and they have a live-boot CD, if you're not already using some flavor of Linux.

You can get away with it yet, but thus far in my experience the Amiga seems a lot happier if you just install it on the actual hardware.
