I was messing around with my 1200, and put in my 2Mb PCMCIA memory card to see if I could get Giana Sisters to load off the Hard Drive.

Well needless to say it didn't, so I turned off my system and removed the card.

After this, every time I booted up, it would not, it would go through the motions, all the lights would dance, but it would sit eternally at a black screen.

I then removed the CF to IDE interface and noticed that it would eventually display a picture, but that it took FOREVER to get to the INSERT FLOPPY screen.

I then left the Amiga on the insert floppy screen and put my CF card in my PC to test with WinUAE.

Low and behold WinUAE froze at a black screen too when booting off the CF, so I booted off floppy, backed up the files off the CF into a HDF image, then reformatted the card and re-installed Work Bench.

All was fine until I decided to test out this new SD to IDE adapter that I received in the mail. When I booted up with that attached my screen jumped around like crazy, I saw diagonal lines upon a black back ground, you name it. So I quickly took out the adapter to find...

...my system now takes forever to get to the insert floppy screen once more.

The only change I have made to my system before all this began was install Kickstart 3.1 roms, though it was acting fine until I put that PCMCIA memory card in there.

KS3.1 introduced a longer delay for detecting slow-to-spinup IDE hard disks.

Tell tale sign what you installed on the IDE bus was not fully compatible or perhaps you accidentally missed by a couple of pins (not tough to do). Might have fried something on the Miggy or that SD doo-dad.

About slow load times, you sure you don't have some other patch going on either? Like IDEFix or some PCMCIA patch messing with the seek time?

@save2600: No patches that I'm aware of. I don't even know what those are. :)

BTW, this is the SDtoIDE adapter that I was using.

And now my Amiga is booting up fast again with the CFtoIDE adapter.

Needless to say I'm not putting that PCMCIA card nor the SDtoIDE adapter in my Amiga ever again!!!

Besides my 40Mhz 030 arrived today from AmigaKit. I've got 16Mb or Fast RAM so I'm good. Too bad it's to slow to run OS 3.9 as smooth as it does OS 3.1

Is that IDE<>SD adapter SATA or PATA? From my understanding, Amiga's require PATA, which is less common. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can explain the who's and why's in detail, but generally speaking:

PATA - Amiga, PeeCee's of yore and Efika
SATA - PeeCee

...and yeah, that PCMCIA RAM is 16-bit. That *IS* going to slow down your 32-bit system.

I knew the PCMCIA would slow down my performance, I just wanted the extra RAM for a moment. Anyhow, the system began to boot slow AFTER it was removed. Then as fate would have it, it worked it self out.

As for the SD adapter, I dunno. Here is the auction:

Gonna test it on my PC to make sure it ain't dead.

As for the CF adapters I've used, I've never had an issue with any of them, except that some made the HD light flash when being read and others didn't.

Yep, while the auction doesn't state SATA specifically, it does mention that it's compatible with the 'standard' IDE format - which currently is SATA naturally.

PATA and SATA use completely different connectors. It is impossible to plug one into the other. If it has 40 or 44 pins, it is PATA.

? Then what the heck am I thinking of? I recently bought two 2.5" laptop drives. One worked in the Efika - one did not. The one that worked, I swear... was a PATA drive. The SATA wouldn't even spin up - both had the same 44-pin connector. And they were clearly labeled as PATA and the other SATA.

Got rid of it within a month  ;)  lol   Efika is seriously underpowered and its 80MB of useable RAM just wasn't enough. Good stepping stone though and makes one thirst for something much more powerful, such as the MacMini G4, which I bought also, but almost got scammed by the seller recently. Never received the unit and the guy didn't want to refund my money. PayPal had to get involved and then weeks later, I finally got my money back.

I had a feeling the Efika would be somewhat of a let down.

Seems that you have condensator dying... Mainly the one next to the PCMCIA port that suffered from your test
