yay, got my 1200
« on: May 18, 2010, 01:43:08 AM »
so it arrived today. Sadly, the power supply I am getting from amigakit will propably not get here for another several days, so right now its sitting on my dinner table. It hasn't yellowed almost anything at all, though the mouse I got was basically amber coloured :)

Any tips on how to prevent it from yellowing other than keeping it out of sunlight?

Don't smoke next to it and certain household cleaners seem to yellow this stuff prematurely too, although I don't have any data collected to know what not to use. Stuff like Fantastic and the like - probably not a real good idea. Mild dishwashing detergent and water seems to be fine.

Oh wait... the absolutely BEST product I've ever used to clean plastics is called Novus. I use it on my pinball parts. Not only does it not scratch or yellow plastics, but after you buff it out, you're left with the super "clean" feel that's supposed to be anti-static/dust repellent.

I live in America (I refuse to call it the U.S.) and in my experience it takes an awful long time for items to arrive from Amiga Kit, but they do deliver and I am grateful that they are out there supporting the Amiga.

HI, As for un-yellowing plastic (ie, your mouse) You should really check out RetroBrite (just Google it) Even though I didn't have concentrated H2O2, it lightened an Amiga trackball of mine by several shades.

I also agree with save2600 about the Novus plastic polishes. Of course, they won't un-yellow plastic, but if the color is actually dirt or grime of some sort, the Novus stuff is great. I bought a C128 at a resale shop that was positively nasty looking :( A few applications of Novus # 2 made it look much better.

Oh, the yellowing occurs as a side-effect of the fire-retardants in the plastic. I may be wrong, but I think that there isn't anything to stop the yellowing permanently, short of using the RetroBrite method.
