Amiga Anniversary & The Future
« on: May 15, 2010, 03:26:43 AM »
Now that the Amiga  is celebrating it's 25th Anniversary, i'm sure quite a few of you have been reminiscing about the good old days, as the current is not what we would want for our beloved machine.
Even as i write this,  Amiga.inc are nowhere to be seen, perhaps they are doing community service, who knows. Our community is still here, so it's not all bad.

Now we look to the future, some new hardware is coming from various places.  The main one that comes to mind and hopes to recapture some of the Amiga glory years is the AmigaOne x1000. Quite a big power house machine that hopes to put the Amiga back to the cutting edge.

Will they succeed when all others have failed? maybe, maybe not. One thing i am quite sure of,  If A-EON could Predict the future, it wouldn't be to far away from this...

Let my future self just say....Thnx bud!

Cutting edge?  Not with those specs.  A modernish machine yeah, but hardly the pushing the boundaries of technology like the original Amiga was.  The key here is survival, maintaining some level of connection to the modern world, no matter how remote.

Previous Amiga resurrections have tried for the mass market, A-EON aims straight for the niche.  That's why they might succeed.  Take a relatively low powered machine and make it interesting by throwing in the XMOS chip.  It may do nothing, but it adds a bit of mystery.

What we\'re witnessing is the sad, lonely crowing of that last, doomed cock.

I just bought Amiga Forever (even tho I have used WinUAE for years). I plan on installing that on a win7 laptop.

I'm keeping some form of Amiga around as long as I live

The future? It will probably continue the same way:

Happy Amiga Enthusiast: Hey everyone, isn't it great that for the first time in years we're seeing plenty of fun new hardware and software developments for us to try out. There's something for everyone, and I'm glad we have such an active and helpful community!

Troll: Pfft! Your small Amiga hobby is expensive and underpowered compared to my unrelated mainstream technology! You are doomed to failure no matter what you try!

The future for amiga, the only viable future I mean, is AROS.

That is unless morph and AOS4 go intel.

I'm very positive about the future.  We've got a better chance of OS4 moving forward then ever before and if the worse happens and it all goes down the toilet we've got AROS ready in the background.

Although the real classic market is finally running out of puff, it looks like we'll have some very nice FGPA replacements soon so even that area is covered :)

Oh and Amiga Inc are no more, another reason to be positive about the future ;)
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

Well, I have installed Amiga Forever on my win7 laptop and while I don't completely understand it all, I am SO impressed! I love seeing an Amiga 1000 screen again!

I installed the new Hollywood and now have to figure THAT out!
LOL

but, it's this kind of fun that is one of the reasons I love Amiga OS

eventually I will get AROS on this thing, too
