OS4.x - Open Source Applications We Want Ported
« on: May 13, 2010, 11:44:06 PM »
Hey all,

I'd like to start a thread that doesn't involve game ports whatsoever, but serious applications ports that development may have already started on, not even thought of, considered or progressing nicely.

This first post will be edited with your comments, progress updates and wishlists.

  • Firefox - Web Browser - In Progress (Timberwolf)
  • Open Office - Office Suite - Started (OOO4 Kids)
  • Inkscape - Vector graphics editor/like Illustrator - My Wish List ... (???)
  • Adobe Flash - In Progress (Gnash)
  • Adobe Air - My Wish List (???)
  • Java - Platform Independence Language - (???)
  • Lives - Video Editing System
  • KompoZer example am not familiar with, but open source - HTML Editor - (Any good ones on Amiga?)
  • Feed For All - RSS Feed creator (good one on Amiga?  Easy program for an experienced developer to make.

Perhaps you can post your answers to my ??? as well post your open source projects that perhaps should be ported to AmigaOS4.

Personally, I wish java would crawl into a hole and die like the vile little "C++ wannabe in denial" that it is ;-) However, I realise that I'm in pretty much in a minority of 1 there, so that would probably be a good target.

There used to be a port of kaffe on OS3.x, but that is probably long since obsoleted.

Editing suite for videos and photos.

Social networking (I don't use them, but if you want to bring people from Win/Mac you better have Inyourfacebook/Twit/Whatever

Office suite

Web suite like Seamonkey(surf,mail,web publish,etc.)

That pretty much covers non-game  computer for average person.
For others more advanced : software writing tool suite, process/remote control software(run house/automate telescope or ?, top quality CAD/CAM ,modeling programs .

I disagree, in that they should be ported to OS4, they should be ported to AROS, and from there to Morphos/OS4/whatever. The reason is simple, AROS pursues no commercial goals, and it is not biased regarding the sourcecode availability. Commercial OSes are biased, in that most of the time, they want to obtain an advantage from the other, just by delivering, many times partial/incomplete/non-compilable sources which are not complete because they incorporate privately developed components right into the code, which of course, they are not publicly available.
If they use AROS as original development platform, they could always have access to the entire sourcecode which will be actually complete, and would in an ideal world, foster cooperation between the coders of every Amigoid OS, and eventually everyone could benefit from it.

Updated list against contributions so far and added a few more in there... with some questions.

@Jope,

Update thread title, the future isn't OS3.x.
