B5 Season 1 disc one...
« on: May 13, 2010, 03:37:08 AM »
Ok, I'm one DVD done, 4 episodes, my thoughts:

  • I will keep watching.
  • If these space scenes are from an Amiga, I'm kinda proud; they are not that bad
  • Rough acting, stiff; hope it gets better. Can't get worse.
  • Best episode was the soul sucker dude...

Hiya,

Yep season 1 was a little 'rough' in the acting department, they really started to the hang of things in season 2 ;)
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

I just saw in our local record store, the full seasons selling for only $20 each. $100 for a boxed retail set - not bad!

It gets better. Some things that may not make sence will come together later on. By end of season, you should be well up for S2, things get alot more interesting.

Stick with it and remember the small details ;)

Enjoy!

Indeed!  Keep track of everything in the first season, you will be tested in later seasons.  And, yes, the acting gets much better.  Especially once "Scarecrow" joins the cast :D

Sadly, from memory, discs 2 & 3 aren't very good either but then, I think, disc 4 starts to improve and by the time you finish disc 5 you'll be hooked.

I am just through the first season. Feels a lot like DS9. Sloppy acting here and there like DS9 as well :)

Some of the episodes are quite hard to endure though. I found myself doing something else and 'listening' to the episode most of the time (watch only important parts).

season ending is cool. season 2 starts cool too. let's hope it goes like this :)

also, is there a written rule somewhere that says every science fiction show has to have a 'japanese inspired alien race' ? (minbari for B5, vulcan for ST)

I've noticed that too. The slanted eye thing. Besides looking different, probably helps with the mainstreams perception of a technically superior race. Nevermind the fact we had a very large hand in building and re-building most all of their major technologically minded manufacturing facilities after WWII. While we either shut down, moved or spent a fortune retrofitting ours ;-)

it's not just the slanted eye vs pointed ear. the martial arts thing, suppression of emotions, writing system with three alphabets etc ...

as for the minbari, martial arts thing again, the code of honor thing (munbari acts of harakiri) and some other stuff that I can't recall now ...

maybe it's just I've spent too much time in japan, lol

Good points. I guess honor, knowing how to fight and conducting yourself logically would seem "alien" to some. lmao

well, I'm about halfway through season 5 now ... talk about this stuff growing on you lol

I came back here to eat my words about the acting. especially the narn guy is awesome. sometimes overdone though. some dialogues are really fantastic. especially delenn's sidekick's.

I'm also little bit disappointed about some scenario twists. especially the 'end' to shadow wars was like WTF ?

pity this show had to end like this, I've also seen the last movie, legend of the rangers or something like that, which was awful really. they should've found some fresh ideas, this 'ancient evil' theme done 3 times is just too much ...

The relationship between G'Kar and Molari is almost the essence of the entire series, and the actors, Andreas Katsulas and Peter Jurasik, are IMO the best of the entire B5 cast.

The Narn Guy, G'Kar, played by the *EXCELLENT* Andreas Katsulas (Romulan Commander Tomolok - ST:TNG, One Armed Man - The Fugitive)

Delenn's SideKick, Lennier. (Billy Mumy)  Little boy from Lost In Space (Original TV series).

Captain Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) and Londo (Peter Jurasik) starred together in the film TRON.  (Well, not directly, CROM got wasted early in to the film).

The actress who played Sheridan's wife in Season 3 who came to take him to Zahadum, was played by Melissa Gilbert (Little House on the Prairie) is Bruce's REAL LIFE WIFE.  The photo frame on Sheridan's desk of his Supposed wedding, when she picks it up in one of the scene's, was one of Bruce and Melissa's wedding photo's.

Lorien (*THE* First one), is also the same actor who played "The inquisitor" (That the Vorlons sent, and tortured Delenn).
