Best config A600HD
« on: May 13, 2010, 03:16:13 AM »
Hello everybody,

Like I said in other post I have an A600HD with 1mb ram and a 4gb card sram, Hard disk with 4mb and the Alien green edition of the classic workbench.
Now,
All I want to do is to play games from the HD, so...
Please, I want to know the best configuration to do this.

Thank you all and greetings

WHDload should work with your current configuration, I'd probably grab a 1MB ChipRAM upgrade while they're available though.

Alienware M14x i7 laptop running AmigaForever

Best: grab an internal 5.5/8Mb FAST RAM expansion (they are out there, in the internet), A601 or compatible 1Mb chip RAM upgrade, a decent sized HD (I think the installed HD is 4Gb, not 4Mb), ROM 3.1 (with the companion Workbench 3.1 installed) and the WHDLoad program.

First grab the image of your actual ROM to use with WHDLoad using Grabkick (available at Aminet) and save the image to DEVS:kickstarts/ before upgrading the ROM. Also grab the 1.3 ROM from an A500 you might have.

WHDLoad games are vastly available searching the internet.
Goodbye people.

I\'ll pop on from time to time, RL is acting up.

I would agree. You should definately upgrade to 2meg chip ram http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=40&products_id=879. You also might want to consider getting a PCMICA CF reader to transfer games over youve downloaded on PC http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=42&products_id=440 Lastly you might want to upgrade your ROMS to 3.1 if you havnt already but to be honest you've pretty much got what you need.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I have the PCMCIA adaptor to CF.

BTW, you can also use iGame on A600 (just remember to download missing MUI*MCC 68000 versions from Aminet). You should also disable iGame picture preview in the iGame icon tooltypes (I didn't recompile for 68000 the MCC of the picture preview or there was some other problem, I can't remember).

Another option is using a launcher like the one done by killer gorilla. I adapted Arcade Game Selector to work on ECS and did small changes to load images using datatypes although I didn't add scaling and colour remapping. I did a pair of preview pictures using 16 fixed colours and some images didn't look nice so using grey tones like Killer Gorilla did may be a good idea. I also thought about showing a fullscreen image and impose the text on top of it but I thought it would eat too much precious chipram :-) I can send by mail my modified ECS AGS with sources if somebody is interested.

About the hardware:*get 1MB of chipmem more, A600 5.5/8MB internal expansion and a compactflash/sd pcmcia reader.

Some of you adviced him to upgrade to ROM 3.1... Why does he need KS3.1???
He only wants to play games, so it's totally unnecessary.
It's a different story if he slaps in a 030 accelerator and want to use WB3.9.
(Altough the 030 is to slow for WB3.9).

Its always advisable to upgrade to 3.1,  just for the advantages of Workbench 3.1 also its cheap to do. I cant say for sure but it may help with compatability with WHDLoad and its installers.

I have a question, a couple of people have mentioned the 8MEG fast ram upgrade but Ive not been able to find one? The site   http://a608-amiga.co.uk/ hasnt been update for an age and if the new batch is being worked on still it must be a slow process. Does anyone know where thay are availible from?

What advantages? Probably the only advantage of WB3.1 is DataTypes, which you don't really need when only playing games on an WB2.0 A600. There are a lot of graphics/text viewers and sample/mod players for WB2.0 for free on Aminet, so no need for DataTypes.

You might also want to consider using a PCMCIA SRAM card, these work up to 4MB and apparently there is no system slow down when used with the A600.

@amidude

Depending on his kickstart he may not be able to use 4GB HDs, with OS3.x compatibility is better IIRC. I don't know if iGame requires OS3.x but perhaps some of the dependencies do.

Crumb, when you got the 8mb expansion?! i'm waiting for months to get one from a new batch, and i'm still waiting.

My A600 HD config have kickstart 3.1 and WB 3.1, 2mb of chip, 2mb of fast through PCMCIA (well it's not so fast, but at least i can play some WHDLoad games that don't work without 4mb), and a CF to IDE adapter with 512mb and for most games it works great.

My A600 has 2.05 ROM (37.350), which can recognize up to 4GB without problems
(there's a 1GB HD inside though).
It's also equiped with the A608 5.5/8Mb FAST RAM expansion. It runs all WHDLoad
games perfect. :)
