Is there an easy way to run KS3.0 on A1000?
« on: May 08, 2010, 08:56:23 AM »
I only ask because getting a rom board for an A1000 is an exercise in futility these days and I can spare the RAM to load up the 16bit version from the 500/2000 after KS1.3 loads into the WOM.

I'm guessing C= never gave a damn about A1000 users in the 90s when KS3 was out right? So no disk based official solution for the 16bit machine. Shame.

(before anyone asks I already own a KS3 machine which I purchased for full price on launch day for the princely sum of 400 bucks, so it's not piracy if I don't use both machines at the same time :P)

Kick 2.0+ requires 512 KB, so there's NO way to load it into the 256 KB WOM.
There's someone around here offering ROM boards which have been reported to work nicely.

There are utilities like Zkick and ykick and twinKick on Aminet.net but for some reason I have had no success in recent tests as I am trying to do the same thing.

However, in the early nineties I had kickstart 2 and OS 2 running on this same A1000. However I am having trouble replicating it. I am getting a Zorro2 adaptor so I can add an A2000 ram/scsi card externally to give me loads of ram and room to add an 030.

By the way if you want to see my A1000 in action check out these videos.

Build a 512k WOM and burn new early startup roms.

The whole point of the kick start booters like the one I used before was that they map into fast ram and free up the 256 WOM memory to the main memory pool. It used to work.

If somebody will build this, I will buy it. As long as it is switch able between 1.3 and 3.1

If that's all you want, then maybe look for a kickstart adapter that plugs into the 68k socket, then use a kickswitcher to switch between the two.

On Aminet is also a utility called twinkick

Maybe that's enough for you?

edit: oops, missed twinkick in the reply of clusteruk.

+1 for Twinkick. Just be sure you have at least 2mb RAM though  :)

Tried TwinKick and the disk creator fails. Did not like my rom files created with GrabKick.

68000 socket in use with ADIDE and spirit ram board.

And I actually have 1.5mb fast ram. However, as I mentioned I had it running in the past. Used to load 1.3 from disk, then script kicked 2.0 rom into fast ram and freed 256mb rom memory and then launched wb2.0 from disk. This worked for ages but lost the drive over the year. Such a fool for losing CLtd scsi card to.

Still getting Zorro2 card adaptor for it and adding GVP scsi/8mb ram soon and hopefully an 030 as well then.

All I need after that is 2mb chip ram.

Super A1000, what a dream.

See her in Bletchley in June if nearby.

But how does KS3 fit in the A500/2000 then if it is replacing a smaller sized ROM? How does it get mapped into the memory map? I assumed size was the reason you needed an A500/2000 specific ROM image.

Zkick is for KS2 only I believe, Skick refuses to allow KS3 to be loaded if you boot with 1.3 and crashes if you boot it with KS2 in RAM on my A1000.

I know the KS3 won't fit into the WOM, but Skick happily loads either 1.3 or 3.0/3.1 on my KS2.1 2MB A600 BUT on the A1000 it happily proclaims KS1.3 is resident and you can't load KS3 if you run the program from WB. VERY ANNOYING lol

I have 2.75mb on my A1000, nice little machine although the internal drive is fussy which is why half the time I need to boot from DF1 as that drive is less fussy and if I have to boot KS2 half the time I wondered if anyone else had managed KS3 or 3.1 on an A1000 into Fastram.

Guess I will just have to carry on X-copying using DF0: as the destination drive to get my stuff working...ho hum.

A500/2000 address decoding provided space for 512 KB ROMs from the start. A 1.2/1.3 ROM just appears twice in that space, lacking the A18 pin.

I used a GVP HD8 on my 1000 and SKick'ed to Kickstart 3.1.  I cannot recall if the SCSI boot ROM allowed the system to boot directly from the hard drive or if I had to leave a Kickstart 1.3 disk in the floppy drive.  I would expect it was the latter.

Either way, I was able to run 3.1 on my mostly-stock 1000.

See. I knew it was best to wait for someone here with knowledge to explain it rather than relying on random google results claiming it's because they are 16bit or something :)

I really don't understand why skick doesn't give the option to go to KS 3 or 2 if you boot up the A1000 in KS 1.3. I might try it with KS 1.2 boot and see if it decides to work tomorrow. The RAM works fine and runs all my 1mb games properly so I don't think there is an issue with the RAM. Also SYSINFO reports the machine is 1.29 the speed of a stock A500 (maybe I forgot the 68010 in there from 1991!)

I'll have a bash at creating a real disk from a download of twinkick and see how that goes.....something useful to do with the spare ST Format coverdisks haha.  Thanks to everyone for their suggestions, appreciated.

did you read the instructions?
the tkg.exe is very unflexible
rom-filenames must be UPPERCASE
