Can you get 5v from the CVPPC card?

I am thinking of mounting a 20x20 mm 5v fan on my CyberVisionPPC card, is there any place on the gfx-board where I can get 5v/ground from?

Thanks, (even if you know the answer but feel that you loose financial gain if you tell us all you know please at least tell us 20% what you know).

I know very little about the CSPPC.  I was never rich enough to own one unfortunately

However, it seems to me that you could quite easily tap your 5V directly from the main power supply? It would just involve routing a suitable cable, surely?

This would be the preferred option too, because even if there is a 5V supply available on the CSPPC, you'd be better off not drawing any current from it with external devices.  If you do start adding things on to the CSPPC's supply, you risk a situation where the on-board 5V line drops and then you could end up with a more unstable system.

My advice would be to connect any fans directly to the PSU if possible.  Then you can use a fan that switches between 12V operation and 5V operation based on temperature as well, if you want.

Oh, sorry you were talking about CyberVision.  Another thing I could never afford ;-)

sometimes it`s best to post facts and not guess whats may or may not be on the card or what may happen if the card is modifyed ( ie add a onboard cooling fan ). answer to be posted.

first which is better?

1. fan fitted to the card with a trailing wire going accross the motherboard, so if you pull the cable accidentally it could rip the component from the card not forgetting it may also block airflow.

there is also the possiblilty of the wire comming out of the socket and touching other componets. ( THE OLD WAY )


2. fan fitted already on the card with a very short cable ( with little access ) making the card like moden GFX cards with onboard cooling. ( THE MODEN WAY ).

Don't have one of these myself, but from the photos on Amiga-Hardware.com, the card appears to be mostly 3.3V logic, with the power being delivered by an on-board regulator.  This will receive 5V from via Cyberstorm card.
So:
1. Find the LT1585 3.3V regulator IC (the large black one with 3 legs)
2. Solder the fan black wire to pin 1 (the bottom leg)
3. Solder the fan red 5V wire to pin 3 (the top leg)

FACTS:

**this applies to the *Bvision* but see no reason why it should not be on the CVPPC**.

the card has 5 and 3v via the regulator (this many  of you know ).

what most of you did not know is that the Bvision also has 12v and to my suprise -12v on the card.

12 and -12v is not used but its there on the card sitting there on the connector. it will take a SUPER EXPERT to solder and used it.


VOLTAGE JROP

i took a voltage reading before connecting the fans in my project lets say for example 4.95v.

the 3 fans were then connected. the voltage reads 4.94 but sometimes read 4.95. so there is little effect of a voltage jrop after the fans were connected but then again this is my set-up and may not be the same for others but i can not see a fan(s) taking away enough off the 5v power point to effect the card if you feel it does effect the card,then get a SUPER EXPERT to fit a 12v fan.

i say do not use a 12v fan on the card ( I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT )


PERFORMANCE

excellent no problems whatsoever,it also showed a small improvment in image quality to the screen compared to old cooling set-up but it could have been better.


BETTER PERFORMANCE ( experts only )

i did this test a few years ago but forgot to add this to my current set-up. so if i find time i may add this in.

some of you are used to adding heatsink to a card,but i found if the heatsink is grounded image quality is improved again not a lot but seems a little bit sharper.



OTHER NOTES.

ram/permedia 2 and that tiny chip ( about 5mm ) are 3.3v. the other two remaining chips ( CYPRESS ) are 5v.
