Amiga Inc formally dead?
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:21:07 PM »
Good morning guys,

I know this is pretty much a case where a search would have been helpful, but I am wondering if Amiga Inc is officially dead and buried.

Was browsing around this morning when I notice that Amiga.com won't pull up.  This could just be my work connection, which censors everything for my protection, but a WHOIS gets me;

Quote
Feb 11, 2010 ... amiga.com. This domain name has been suspended due to invalid Whois information.
 If you are the registrant of this domain name please ...

Then I notice on the bunny that all of the trademarks were suspended YEARS ago under challenge;

As such, is Amiga Incorporated officially gone, dead and buried?

Well, if you go here: https://www.verio.com/domain-name-registration/index.cfm?cid=%27%24JGTS%20SLS%40%20%20%0A

and check for amiga.com, it is available for just $9.95 a year.

Yes, but if you try to purchase it (as I did) it comes up as not available.  I'm guessing it's pending deletion for the invalid WHOIS info..

The way the expiration date works is that the date listed (the 2011) is to allow godaddy to keep it in their system during the grace period, which I'm not sure applies.

I don't think anyone can touch it until the expiration date expires.  I'd equate it to the unofficial parking space by not letting it resolve.

Called Godaddy, you are correct.  It expires in June, but is suspended currently for invalid WHOIS information and there's been no attempt to correct that issue.

Dead.  The line forms to the left.

Or, it could just be a resurrection of that grand old internet registrars' practice of front-running... again. It was available, until you asked for it, when we instantly "tasted" (registered) it ourselves (for your convenience) and we'll "hold" it "available" for you (as long as you pay us $X), because we don't actually have to pay for it yet...

No surprise here Wayne.  I'm just amused that their website lasted as long as it did.  Now where is that photo by Eric Schwartz that shows Amy looking over the grave of Amiga?  We could use it to close out this thread.

Ah, this is very good news to start a day indeed ! :)

I hope the Amiga copyrights also fall into PD or into the hands of someone who'll do something about them ...

I tried to buy it too, but by using godaddy's "Domain Buy Service", where you pay them to negotiate a deal with the domain owner. You don't have to google much to get a hold of upset articles on the web describing how godaddy has a habbit of pulling back domains for more or less valid reasons (invalid whois info being one that often gets mentioned), to sell them off to new customers. I thought I might have a chance by using the "Domain Buy Service" from godaddy themselves, so I paid the fee! :) After a while though, I had suddenly "asked for a refund" (huh?!??!), the service was canceled, and my money put back into my account. I asked for an explanation, but never got one. Anyway, worth a try! ;)

Anyway, if anyone is interested, their "Certified Domain Name Appraisal" service (which was included in the Domain Buy service) suggested that the domain to be worth between $1,268-$3,296. My ass! A domain that has been dead for a decade. But I was prepared to pay $1,500 for it, which also was my bid.

My plan was actually to make a latino-lesbian site out of it. Seriously! :)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

Assuming no one from Amiga Inc steps in to claim it, Amiga.com will go to auction.  You have to realise that while it is worthless as a computer domain the name "Amiga" means Female friend in both Portuguese and Spanish.  It could easily be worth a small fortune to a dating service or the infamous Español Lesbianas.

My guess:  minimum €25,000, maximum €250,000.

This is big, a real word, in a big real language, in dot com.
