Jaguar XJ220 / A1200
« on: April 02, 2010, 12:48:19 PM »
Hi all, 1st time poster, long time reader and recently decided to build a retro games collection. 1st thing on the agenda was to get my A1200 out of the loft and let it see the light of day again :)

Cut a long story short, many moons ago when XJ220 came out my friend gave me a copy which upon booting always said "cracked by skidrow" Now, this game worked flawlessly all the time, every time.

Fast forward to last week when I bought the game of eBay. The game refuses to run. I bought another copy of the game which does the exact same thing..... nothing. I will also point out my Cannon Fodder and Elite 2 discs work fine.

Reading around the net, it would appear XJ220 is not compatible with A1200? So my question is this.

Why on earth did a dodgy copy work back in 92 and now when I got the original, it refuses to even load?

My A1200 does not have a hard drive, everything is stock (desktop dynamite bundle baby :afro:) I have pressed both mouse buttons up boot and played around with some settings to no avail.

please help me play one of my fave racers again... i have the mega cd version, but i really cant stand it in comparison lol

tia

Welcome to the forum and the scene Sly.

Most likely your floppy drive is up the creek and will either need a head cleaner or a strip down. This is oh-so common now and I have been needing to do this to atleast 3 machines I can think of.

thanks for the response guys :)

having a quick look on google, i found this info on XJ220... (to avoid external linking i will just copy and paste)

"Compatibility Information
A500    YES
A600    YES
A1200    NO - Use WHDLoad patch
CD32    NO
Required:        Recommended:
Comments:    HD Installer avail from WHDLoad"

It could be my floppy drive, but my other games run fine. so i dont know. I played around with a few more settings on boot and managed to get the CORE logo loading screen and the intro music, but when you start the game it hangs. I also get the same result with the other copy I bought. I think more likely I may need to pickup an A600 :(

You REALLY should get a 4GB Compact Flash card on a CF-IDE adapter, install Workbench and WHDLoad, install a few thousand Amiga games and a boot menu, and forget those old compatibility problems and untrustworthy floppy disks.

I dont fancy modding it in anyway. The cost of that would be similar to an A600 of eBay and I know that would work. I'm not to tecchy minded

You could also try to softkick your a1200 to kickstart 1.3 or something.
I personally doubt it is the drive if other games work fine.

Oh Slyder, it's not that hard really! Perhaps someone here might be friendly enough to set up the CF card for you, so all you would need to do is unscrew five screws from the bottom of the case, open the case, plug in the CF adapter (it will plug straight in), close the case and do up the five screws again. From that point on, if you don't stick a floppy disk in first the Amiga will boot up into Workbench or a games selector menu, depending on how it's set up. You have no idea what you're missing out on if you limit yourself to floppy disk software.

If you're still determined to get the game running from floppy disk, since you own at least one legit copy of the game you shouldn't feel bad about downloading the cracked version of the game, writing it back to floppy, and playing that on your A1200 since it seems like the only version that will work on your default setup. You will need to find a way to get the ADF file back onto your Amiga so you can write it to floppy though.

I think it might indeed make a difference.. I have seen it happen with other games as well. Gotta love it when a pirated version is more compatible. But anyways.. you could try to get the adf file from: http://team.back2roots.org/Games/Find/?find=jaguar

did yours come up "cracked by skidrow" before the CORE logo appeared by anychance? lol

Getting the ADF isnt a problem, its getting it onto a disc that I'm worried about. I will scout ebay for relokick as that might work. be alot cheaper then a 600 to play it on :)

If you have the WB/extras floppies then that should be no problem. Just format a 720k floppy or two, compress it and then use crossdos to read the floppy. You can then use adf2disk on the amiga to write the adf to a real amiga floppy.
