I always wondered where the expression came from...

I hope he or she doesn't get a splinter.
You never know....It may not have been sanded and varnished, or it may have worn off.

There was an article on the Times (IIRC) website a few days ago about the recent allegations that the current Pope had buried complaints about dodgy priests when in his previous position. Obviously, they are serious allegations and it's no laughing matter but I couldn't help but notice the correspondent's name was "Roger Boyes"....
