Greetings to you all!

I'm a South African living in Switzerland feeling all nostalgic over his computing past and VERY much keen to get back into his old Amiga days.

I remember as if it was yesterday, the day a friend called me over to show me his new Amiga 500. I was totally blown away! I want that again...

I know it's "cheating", but I'm gearing up to buy a copy of MorphOS for my G4 Mac Mini. I'm actually very interested in making it my main system at home. I'm a Linux/Unix System Engineer/Developer by trade and so I've been looking for a hobby OS to get into, and if it gives me access to all my games/apps from my Amiga, then it's a double bonus.

If anyone can offer me some advice regarding any cool Amiga projects on the go that needs a developer please let me know. I would love to get into some hardcore Amiga development!

You might want to try out the unregistered version of MorphOS if you haven't already.  If your Mac Mini hits a snag it would be nice to find this out before paying 250 Euros.  http://www.morphos-team.net/ has the downloads there for the ISO image.

I'm a developer for the Mattathias project which is an attempt to bring AmosPro software to modern machines using LLVM as our code generator.  If you would be willing to try to port LLVM to MorphOS, I would be very grateful.  Especially since I think MorphOS is stuck with an out-of-date version of GCC in many cases and Clang makes a nice C compiler.  The Mattathias project mailing list page is at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/mattathias/.  If you are interested in joining the team make a mention there.

hi & welcome.... You might even want to check out AROS as it's been having great development the last little while.  I personally use Amiga OS4.1 u1 via a Samflex MB and love it ..and I'm certain you've heard of the upcoming brand new AmigaOneX1000:-)....either way welcome back to the Amiga!

Hi, the linux version of the Amiga emulator has room for a skilled coder, and a small fast linux
like DSL or Puppy that auto-booted and launched the emulator at startup would be useful for
lots of people with last years PC gathering dust. Have fun!

Hey there! Thanks for the advice. I installed MorphOS last night and I must say it looks really slick on the Mac Mini! It's incredibly fast and has definitely resurrected my G4! I think I'll more than likely fork out the 150 Euros for the license. The community seems quite active which sounds positive.

Hey there! Yeah, I did some looking around at AROS last night. It looks pretty cool as well, although I don't think I could use it as my main workstation. I have heard of the infamous X1000 , looking forward to it's launch!

So I've been contemplating buying a A1200 which I'd like to use an LCD monitor with. I'm so out of touch with Amiga hardware that I'm re familiarizing myself with the various expansion cards and what functions they have!

If anyone has any advice putting together a A1200 rig, I'm all ears.

I have a pretty nice setup here using just a Fast RAM expansion (8 mb), a CF card for a hard drive and an SD PCMCIA adapter for transferring stuff. Software-wise, I'm running OS 3.0 (with KingCON) and whdload for my gaming needs. 99% of all HD fixed games work on this setup, and most demos, too.

CF card HD adapters can be had here: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10310 (I have not tried this particular adapter, but you can others in that price range)

Ad to that an Indivision AGA flickerfixer/scandoubler and you've got yourself a nice setup that should run nicely with any VGA monitor.

I actually ran this setup with a PCMCIA network card, too clumsily browsing the web with AWeb. Actually, it isn't so bad if you turn off the pictures. I used it for a long time, running a small web server on my PC so that I could reach my whdload game collection from the amiga. But yeah, for my intents the SD card adapter was far better.

Hey there! Thanks for all the information folks. It is much appreciated.

So, I'm definitely going to my a MorphOS license for my Mac Mini, which has a nice 20" Dell WS LCD hooked up to it. For the retro component, I'm currently deciding on buying a A1200 with a 4GB CF and a 32meg Blizzard 1230 IV expansion. I've got a Sumsung 2032MW LCD TV at home with a SCART interface and so I'm hoping that I can hook up the A1200 to it using a RGB 2 SCART cable. I've heard that it's luck of the draw, so I'm hoping my luck holds out!

What do you guys think?

As for the 1230: I would like to say that I sold mine and never looked back... But I did, so I can't! Would love to have kept it, because it really is a good accelerator. Many AGA demos seem to expect a fairly fast accelerator to be able to exceed slideshow speed.

Yeah, I'm hoping the RGB 2 SCART cable works with my Samsung, otherwise I'm going to have to fork out 130 Euro for the Indivision AGA.

I must admit, I have no real need for the Blizzard except just to toy around with. The one thing I really miss with 80s and early 90s computing is that hardware was very well documented and had a degree of "openness" which allowed all sorts of creative ideas to flourish. Now days. everything is closed in fear of loosing money, market share etc. Sure, in the old days companies where there to make money, but the whole scene just seemed fun!

I guess where we are now is as a result of evolution... sometimes I often dream of turning back the clock back to when times where more simple where we all owned 8bit and 16bit 'puters!

I am a current MorphOS user that is trying to improve my programming skills so I can contribute to the number of MorphOS compatible applications and games.  It is exciting to see a new developer take an interest in MorphOS on the G4 MacMini.  We certainly need more developers creating more applications and games that will run on MorphOS.  I am looking forward to seeing  what you decide to work on in the future.  MorphOS is an excellent choice and runs very well on the G4 MacMini.  You may want to check out CubicIDE and Hollywood for MorphOS.

Hi amigadave. MorphOS is a very exciting OS for me, as it offers enough for me to use it as my main computer and it originates from Amiga OS which frankly was ahead of its time. It's not bloated as most common OS and runs VERY well on older hardware. I'm definitely in the camp of let's take advantage of the hardware we have and use it to it's full ability, than let's throw more hardware at it to make it faster and more responsive.

I actually made a post on morphzone this morning regarding development for MorphOS. Hopefully one of the MorphOS developers will reply.

I've taken a look at CubicIDE which I believe is one of two IDE's available for AmigaOS/MorphOS, I could be wrong. I would love to buy a license, but I'm going to need to wait until the next paycheck for that.

I'm glad to hear that you interested in developing apps for MorphOS! Maybe there is something we could work on together in the future!
