Good Opensourcegames
« on: November 18, 2003, 09:14:18 AM »
Does anybody now of a good opensource game for PC he would like to see on Amiga. I want to make an effort and try to convert one. Something easy would be better for the beginning (No 3D etc). But just post what you'd like.

mmmmmm Racer? :-)  Racer is not open source, but you can download the source if you ask to the author before. There is already versions for Win, Linuc and MacOS.
There is a lot of good OS games :-)

@Emufreak
Why don't you port some updated open source emulators to the Amiga?

The Amiga is severly lacking in emulator updates. For example MAME (Old Amiga port) and Generator (Old Amiga port), and how about porting some new emulators to the Amiga, such as SMS Plus or one of the open source SNES emulators listed on Google.

BTW, do you code for the PPC?

there is an old Amiga version (0.35.12) http://www.triumph.no/mame/ as JoNty wrote :-)

A Warp version (0.37b2) http://www.amidog.com/emu/mame/

A newer Warp version (0.37b16) http://homepage.powerup.com.au/~cward/boot1024e.html

There is a MorhOS version (0.69) http://perso.wanadoo.fr/fabien.coeurjoly/

Civilization II would be nice but I see a little problem in the License Agreement of the source code. They Write:

Game Materials may be created only if such New Game Materials can be used exclusively in combination with the retail version of Call to Power II. New Game Materials may not be designed to be used as a stand-alone product.

I think that means, you can't make totally new game.

Amiga would use parts of retail civ II data files, and wouldn't be  stand-alone product.

I've installed several games through apt-get so i assume they're open source...

*tuxpuck - clone of shuffle puck cafe - if i remember that correctly
*Abuse - Awsome kill aliens and stuff :) you'r a little man with an array of weaponry !! very good!
*Xevil - also a very good game, of which my avatars are made :) basicly you'r a random character that has to kill over characters, not suitable for children as it has the odd reference to strangle your cat, take drugs... and you can sell your soul for an extra life and also gain powers to sumon deamons :) but its a fantastic game!

Theres many more, including some i cant installed because my system is very minimal! But theres some great games out there that use Mesa/OpenGL. I'd love to see some one the Amiga, infact i was going to start thread similar to this last week but couldnt be bothered! :)

You've also got the scrolling space shootem ups and space invaders clones shuch as XSolder, Galaga and a few tetrix like games that are cool... Theres so many open source games... Also note, Xevil and Abuse are kinda like old Amiga games :) so i find them cool in that way too!

Also, you cant forget Xbill... In this game you have to stop all the bill gates from infecting the linux/unix/macos servers/computers with Windows :) To do that you just kill all the gates characters... If some get infected and catch on fire, you've also got some water handy to put it out! :)

Call to Power is in no way shape or form Civ2. I was so excited reading the manual and tech tree in the car waiting to get home. I loaded it up. started multiplayer with my brother. after a while we sat looking at each other. something just didnt feel right. where was the soul, the emotion, the feeling, the CIV.

it was like playing cardboard. it just felt so bland and blah. yes Blah. there is no better word for it.
I had it all boxed up and noone would buy it off me. Call to Power II?? Blah!! thats all that i can say.

Civilization 2 was like welcoming home and old friend. Civ 2 multiplayer was played more on my PC than any other multiplayer game ever. Civ 3 is great, but there is something about Civ2 that makes it the ultimate game. never fades and never grows old.

Shame the legal stuff means u can make a whole new game out of the Call to power code. maybe it could have been stripped to try and create Sid Miers' Civ2 rather than Civilization 2 call to power.

Isnt that how Quake and Freespace work on the amiga? you need the original PC disks?

edit:
CTP2 has been ported to Linux already, so looks like it should be able to be ported to AmigaOS and MorphOS. hopefully someone can delete the blah from the source code.

A vaguely similar thread on AW led me to flightgear - a GPL flight sim of incredible magnificance! I'm busily trying to get my OpenGL to work again (X doesn't like my KT400 chipset...).

There's over 9GiB of satellite photos for the terrain alone!

THIS game looks so awesome, can't wait to play it (X takes years to compile)!

This has to be the BIGGEST GPL'd game I've seen, as far as "artwork" goes but I guess in this case the real world is pretty big to pull "artwork" from ;-)

IMHO that's the problem with a lot of GPL games if you try to compare them to commercal stuff... OK game engines, but they lack the manpower for decent artwork in any reasonable volume.

- Paul

[edit: I would like to think that if I attempted to port any game, this is what I would try "First" ;-) ]
