Universal Games Controller
« on: March 04, 2010, 10:42:50 PM »
Not sure this has been mentioned but...

SONY has filed for a universal games controller patent
which not only covers the popular Nintendo, Microsoft
and SONY products but also the Amiga CD32. The
aim is to create a touch screen LCD which would lay
out the buttons for the configurations of the various
game pads...

Rumble on an Amiga.... :-)

Seems a stupid idea, using an LCD screen to emulate buttons? Much fun without the tactile feedback...

I wonder what small pieces of smashed Liquid Crystal Display would feel like in your thumbs.

This reminds me of three things i've read about:

I saw a prototype video of an LCD touch interface that had a layer of plastic on top that could inflate in areas based on electrical current thus providing tactile response.

On hackaday.com some time ago I saw an atmega prototype device that had microswitches in 4 spots on a tiny LCD, the interface was pressing on the lcd which rocked the switches.

Can't remember the third, damn!

I still maintain the PS1 to be the joint best games console ever made. The other best one would be the N64. I'm not sure what to think of the saturn even though it was a crap design. I really don't understand why they listed the CD32 there though.

I am playing Bayonetta on the PS3 at the moment and was told the XBOX 360 version was superior. I also have an XBOX Elite and can tell you that the game is worse on the Microsoft machine. Only the save time between levels is faster. The PS3 runs hot and has locked up a few times. Also it is Network dependant... which is a pain. The PS2 was pretty solid though a poor design. The PS1 was classic hardware and a marvel. SONY stuff is generally superior to anything and I have all my electrical gear made by SONY.

There have been issues with SONY in the past but I care little if I get the best for the money. That is why I purchased an Amiga... cus it was the best computer for the money. Nothing MS have produced is anything other than a poor immitation of someone else's good idea. Nothing on the XBOX is innovative. Same goes for the OS... But I guess we all knew that.

On that controller I guess this is going to be the first step on the way to a programmable all purpose hand held unit for a lot more than just gaming.

SONY's controller is still the best ever... Should be the industry standard. Certainly all the PC controllers immitate the SONY one.

The Saturn has the best controller ever built, end of discussion. :)

Sure does. The Playstation D-pad is awful, and I'd much prefer to have six face buttons as well as shoulder buttons than four on the front and four on the top. A Saturn pad layout with a couple of analogue sticks would be perfect for just about any kind of game.

Nothing will ever beat the original Mega Drive rolling D-pad though. The one where the D-pad is connected to a stalk that passed through the PCB and presses back UP against the bottom of the PCB, rather than just pressing DOWN on top of it like all other D-pads do. This gives the pad more roll than other D-pad designs without turning it into a mini joystick on a pad.

You have got to be joking.... Try punching the buttons doing the last boss in Bayonetta and you would do yourself an injury... And probably bust the thing. I have tried every controller and broken more than I can remember. Controllers take a real hammering and games like God of War, Bayonetta and even Final Fantasy need a very responsive, lightweight, easy to use, durable controller. The new wireless SONY controller on the PS3 when playing games like Heavenly Sword are just magic.

Sorry but things have moved on a bit, as have games. And you really need a controller that can keep up with the pace of the modern game. Final Fantasy arrives Tuesday and God of War two weeks later... What is amazing is that the PS controller has outlived most and still the preferred weapon of choice.

As to joysticks, which I guess was a joke... I have a box 4 foot square almost full of ones I've busted playing just Sensible Soccer.. No ta. My Amiga has a gamepad.

PS Sega made Bayonetta... Never forgive them giving up on my Dreamcast.

My white Saturn...
