Amiga Format or Shopper on DVD anywhere?
« on: March 03, 2010, 10:22:52 AM »
I have seen heaps of other DVD's on ebay with Zzap 64, Zero, CU Amiga magazines etc, but was wondering if there was any Amiga Shopper and Amiga Format available on DVD anywhere?  Are they even available from Future Publishing?

I don't think so, definitely not from Future.  Still, top idea if someone can do it!

I am missing only No 4 of Amiga Format to own the entire collection, and I can tell you that the column of magazines which make that collection is massive. That would be a very big task for someone.

I obtained all my Amiga Shoppers from a guy who was scanning all the pages in but gave up. It really would be an amazing challenge...

I am pretty sure that one of the Amiga Sites has summary sheets for all the magazines. I have all the cover disks on CD not DVD by the way.

On the Website in the Help Section I have a review of Amiga Formats
of Christmas past....

[ just a sample ]

Amiga Format

AMIGA FORMAT: Issue 5 Dec 1989
Britains Leading Magazine for Amiga Owners

How the Amiga has furthered man`s ventures
into the space and beyond the computer screen.

ITS SHOWTIME: Commodore come to Earls Court.
Commodore`s stand at the PC Show was
impressively large, white walled affair, with
plenty going on inside. There was everything
from a games arcade to DTP, graphics to music,
even helpful folks from Commodore`s technical
support department were on hand.

... Demos included Pen pal from Brown Wagh,
Music X from Microillusions, Arena from ASAP
and Ocean, Domark and Mirrorsoft showing off
their latest games.

One of the highlights on Commodore`s stand was
Discover from Xebec. It`s an interactive
information system aimed at providing point of
sale information. It consists of a touch
sensitive keypad linked to an A2000.

[ You get the idea ]

Perhaps we can devote some time to preserve it for all members.

I am happy to scan in some Amiga Format annuals that I have, is it possible to store them on this site somewhere as a resource?

If each person did one Amiga Format magazine (there is 136 in total) it would make an awesome resource for everyone here.

Have you all looked at the Amiga Magazine Rack site? They have more of the UK magazines scanned. I sent them a couple, which is a pain considering I'm on dialup... and they never integrated them into the database. So I kinda lost intrest in them. Most of my scans are US mags, but I have some Amiga Format from issue 83 up scanned... more or less... I tended to dump advertising on the UK mags.

I'm sure it would violate the site's policy to host them here...

AMR: http://amr.abime.net/

AMR is a great effort, but far from complete. In addition to the many magazines that have yet to be scanned, a lot of the current ones only have pages related to games.

To get the collective works of the most popular Amiga magazines online would be a fantastic resource. Most sites covering mags tell you the contents and have one or two images. Trouble is to do this justice you would need to take the magazine apart. I have in the collection a vast number of the magazines and hope in time to fill in all the gaps. I do have multiple copies of magazines so taking these apart wouldn`t be a problem. For me they are truly wonderful as a source of information. I also have all the cover disks, many still on the magazines... There is a lot and its all very heavy and takes up loads of space. Amazing just how many Amiga related magazines there were.

Maybe when I retire and open my Amiga museum I will oblige.

Next week I am again on my travels being gifted someones collection. Amiga folk do this so their beloved machines do not get trashed or sold. Also allows them to see the kit online. No doubt a number of magazines and disks will be included, and I always hope I can fill in the gaps. As I say I only need edition No 4 of Amiga Format... In time I guess. No real rush.

PS There is a special section in the menu on the site for disks and magazines so if anyone knows there is something in the mag of interest to them, mail me and I can scan the details and forward on. Done this many times.

The best way to scan them is destructive. ;-) I had a scanner with an ADF, so I would just slice off the spine with a utility knife & straight edge, then run the pages through. The scanner was a bit dodgy, so the scans aren't the best quality, but they're all legible. I've been thinking about some sort of massive index to the 35,0000+ files in that directory. ;-)

I must have thrown out a couple hundred pounds of computer mags last year.  I downloaded everything I had and more off of usenet and cleared up a big section in my storage unit.  several cubic yards of publications on a 1.5 terrabyte hard drive.  I did keep the transactor mags though.  Those are treasures.
